Interest Thread for Octoscroller boards
« on: July 21, 2015, 09:35:43 AM »
This is an interest thread for fully assembled Octoscroller boards used/mounted on a Beagle Bone Black (BBB) running the Falcon Player Software.

More information about them can be found at:
Octoscroller
http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,2291.0.html

The boards will be fully assembled, and are expected to cost around $20/each

This is an interest thread only.  If you have interest, please post how many you might purchase.  If there is enough interest, we'll start a new thread for the purchase.  Thank you!
John

Coincidentally I was thinking of doing the same thing. As I despise the layout of the octoscroller boards with vias very close to pads which makes it a risk for novices soldering them up I created my own pcb layout and I have a couple of proto boards on the way to check to see if I made any mistakes. My layout gets rid of 35 of the vias, moves the remaining vias away from the pads, changes the footprint of the headers so that the notch appears on the overlay, moves the header numbers to where they can be read and allows a 5mm terminal to be fitted so that power can be inserted to the board there rather than from the 0.1" header that is currently on the layout. I was going to offer boards and completed boards (primarily for Aussies) once I've checked the layout.

your improvements are great!

I have soldered one already with problems, and while I'm not completely a novice, I'm still novice enough to mess it up.
a few of us have visually inspected the board without any insight to the mistake.

that said, I'm tempted to have john do my soldering... :)

What iron are you using?  It sounds like your tip may be a bit to large and the temp may be a bit too cool.

I would nearly bet that the problem will be 1 of the vias that are close to the pads for either P10 connectors o the bbb headers. There is only about 8 thou clearance and the solder mask doesn't have full tenting to cover the copper. This makes it very easy to bridge between the pads and the vias. A decent quality 0.7mm solder definitely makes things easier too. Using 1mm or 1.4mm as is common for those who don't do a lot of soldering makes it very easy to bridge.
