How many WS2811 12V strings @ 7.36W/m
« on: October 14, 2015, 11:44:55 AM »
can be connected to one output of the F16V2 controller?

Here's my thinking for these 12V strips from Ray Wu's shop:

http://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/5m-DC12V-WS2811-150LEDs-10pixes-m-IP68-full-color-epoxy-resin-filled-WHITE-PCB-digital-strip/701799_32348743816.html

Strips require 7.36W/m and each F16V2 output fused at 5A, so 12V * 5A=60Watts.  60W / 7.36W/m = 8.26meters of LED strip.  Thus, you can't even have two complete 5m reels attached to 1 output without overloading it.

These strips have 10 pixels/meter.  Therefore, about 80 pixels per output can be driven.  These strips light 3 LEDs as a pixel. Is my thinking here correct?  Seems a lot lower than the 680 pixels per string (which I'm assuming is connected to 1 output) that the F16V2 is spec'd to be capable of driving.

Thanks for any assistance!

I will have 6.5 amps per port so I am not using the power outputs on the board. Power injection that bypasses the board will let you use as many strings as you want. Only use the data out of the board.

Just what I was thinking, directly driving all LEDs from the board alone is limited in the power it can provide.  You have to power inject for the rest of the strip/string run length.

Use the controller for the data instead of for both power and data for the entire run length.

One of the things that I did because of higher amperage requirement of some strings is I mounted some Hella Spade Fuse Blocks and ran the power supply to a ganged buss. This allowed me to use 7.5 amp spade fuses and run power from the block and a common ground buss. The controller only has the data wire connected. Just for clarification I mount the controller in a CG1500 box using a mounting board, this allows the Hella and Ground Buss to be mounted to the mounting board then running the connector through the bottom of the CG1500 out of a 1" strain relief clamp.
