How to run hzeller rpi-rgb-led-matrix under FPP1.8
« on: May 03, 2016, 06:53:54 AM »
I'm just wondering if anyone has had success running a hzeller rpi-rgb-led-matrix active 3 board for controlling P10 panels from a PI from FPP 1.8. I plugged a board in thinking that the standard settings for a panel would be right be the P10 panels seem to be telling me that there is some sort of mismatch somewhere.
Details of the board are at https://github.com/hzeller/rpi-rgb-led-matrix/tree/master/adapter/active-3

Looks like same layout as Ron's Pi Hat P10 board.

I have not used Henner's board, but have used Ron's board and I believe that uses the same schematic.  I have used Henner's passive 3-output and single-output boards as well with the latest version of FPP.

Make sure you reboot after enabling the output, the reboot is necessary to disable the onboard audio which conflicts with the LED panel output code.

I'm waiting for Mouser to get me parts for two of Ron's Pi / P10 boards. Then I'll be looking for the same info

Can someone point me to the info on Rons boards and I will have a look to see if they look to be the same as what I made up.

Based on the info below from the help file what I have and what is supported don't even come remotely close to matching. I also couldn't find the "RGB-LED_Adapter" page on the wiki. I did find http://www.falconchristmas.com/wiki/FPP_Pi_Hub75_LED_Panel_Adapters and these are nothing like the Henner 3 output board.

RGBMatrix - The RGBMatrix output can drive up to four of the 'P10' style 32x16 RGB LED Panels. These panels may be wired directly to the Pi's GPIO header or an adapter board may be used to handle the wiring. The adapter board PCB info and BOM are listed in the Falcon wiki at RGB-LED_Adapter. Make sure the pinout of your LED panels matches the pinout of the LED port on the adapter board before using one of these with your panel or it will not function properly.

The stuff in the FPP wiki is the old pinout for the old version of henner's library.  We should remove that now or indicate that it only works with FPP v1.7 and below.  We upgraded the library version in FPP v1.8 to support the Pi v2 and v3 and allow the triple outputs supporting up to 36 panels total on the quad-core Pi.  Currently FPP v1.8 is stuck at 24 panels but it will support 36 as soon as I apply the bugfix patch (now that I am back in town after being out of town for work all last week).

Hi all,
first time posting here, so go easy :)

I want to run the hzeller code on a Raspberry pi to drive a RGB panel, so recently, I bought the following boards to connect my Raspberry pi to a Hub75 RGB matrix panel; https://oshpark.com/profiles/CaptainMurdoch

I soldered up the board and connected it to my Pi and to the RGB panel via a ribbon cable but it doesn't work.

I traced the pinout of the boards and they are completely different from the pinouts on hzeller's page:

https://github.com/hzeller/rpi-rgb-led-matrix

Is there anything I can do to get this rig working?

Are there updated boards I can buy?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks,

PK

thanks

I have a working patch that will allow supporting all 3 pinouts that are out there:

- the 'classic' version (the version supported by FPP v1.7, Henner's original library, and my original boards, although I will probably take these down from OshPark sometime)
- the adafruit version (pre-assembled single-output board available on adafruit.com)
- the new/standard version used by all the recently created hats

I need to do a little more testing tomorrow and then I can get it merged into FPP v1.8.

Captain:
I can help in testing the Adafruit boards for you. I am going to the colorado meet up this weekend, would be good to show these there as well.

I have merged this code into the master-v1.x branch and Ben is going to do a little more testing, then I can see about getting it merged into FPP v1.8.
