Why Falcon FW?
« on: November 02, 2016, 07:09:24 AM »
This is probably a dumb question.  I've looked through this sub-forum trying to find an answer, but can't quite identify it.  Why would I put the Falcon FW on my Zeus and/or SSCs?  I see lots of posts of people doing it, but not sure why?  Can someone link me to a thread that describes why/how/benefits/etc?

Thanks

(don't own a Zeus, so skipping that)

The biggest advantage to Falcon firmware on my SSCs was that I could configure them without having to physically move a jumper on the SSC.

Once you have assigned the SSC with a starting address, you could send changes to it for Node counts or device types or Forward/Backward, grouping, etc...

Only an SSC with that starting address will accept the program change.

Kept me off of the roof a lot.

The couple things I like about it.

built in test (v4)-move the jumper to get a quick test of your lights

Program on the fly without having to move the jumper/power down/up.  Change your config quickly without hassle.

Ups the string max to 150 from 128.

The built-in test function is the best part of the FW for the Zeus.

Built in test function is really REALLY helpful.   Reduces alot of frustration when debugging.  Main thing to me is that the Falconware is rock solid and stable.

Ok, thanks guys.  Flashed the Falcon FW to my SSCs tonight and was immediately sold on the changing of the address without having to get onto the board.

Just an FYI... I was able to successfully do this on my macbook via VirtBox running a windows VM.  Programmed the pic and config.  Just in case someone else was wondering if you could.

I would suggest doing the same with your Zeus.  I personally worked out the kinks on the Zeus with David.  To be honest, I really prefer David's approach to controllers and it has really helped me enjoy the hobby much more.  I could never remember all the various details of the DLA programming.

I will warn you about the Zeus.  I busted my hump in the day helping RJ beta the SSCv4 and Zeus and we could never get distance to first node very far.  Felt bad for him as he really tried.  We got 6' at best IIRC.  The F16 stock is good to 15-20' and with afterburner 50-60'.  Also, the Fhub is INCREDIBLY flexible!  You can choose different dmx universes and PN universes from hub/exactly what you want (I do this too).  And the fuses...  Oh the fuses!

2 Questions:

1.  I have a strip of 1811 flex strips.  They are not listed.  What do you recommend to use?
2.  Color order for SSCs set in SW (i.e. xLights) and not firmware?  I set my strings to String, but the color order is BGR.

Try Rectangular.
