Where to buy RGB's in bulk?
« on: January 31, 2017, 07:24:18 AM »
Does anyone have an idea where I might be able to get some RGB's in bulk? I am thinking about expanding the number of RGBs in my show and a lot of my display items use "unique" numbers of lights (for example, my lights poles are 27 pixels tall by 12 strings) and it would be great if I could guy a few huge strings that have 1000 pixels (just for example) so it will be easier to cut the lights to length rather than cutting a bunch of 100 pixel strings down 3 times (27 pixels each) and then having 19 left over.

Currently I use WS2811 12V, so that's what I'm looking to stick with this year as well. All of my lights last year were bought from Ray Wu, and I am very pleased with them.

I haven't tried yet but have heard you can get Ray to customize virtually anything by contacting him.

Not only will Ray build them to length, but he will put connectors on them.  You should at least ask for a quote

I wouldn't ask Ray for a 1000 bulb string, and then have to cut them all down to the right size.  Just ask for a 27 bulb string, or 54 if you wanted to go up and back.  Heck, should be able to power 108 without a problem.  But if you are going custom, get what you want with the connectors installed, rather than making more work for yourself.

If you are looking for a bargain, I think Holiday Light Express is about the cheapest I have seen once you consider shipping. I bought 2300 lights (23 strings of 100) ws2811 bullet nodes for $30 per string, and the shipping came to $17 and some change. Much cheaper than ordering from China. Although you will have to order and solder on the pigtails yourself. I think they have their presale going to the end of February with July delivery dates.

I have thought about emailing Ray to see if I could do some customization but haven't gotten to it yet. I plan on using strings of 108 (27 up then 27 down, up again and down). Between the 27th, 54th, and 81st nodes I'll need a small spacing, about 6", I was going to solder an extension, but I think the pigtails would work just fine so long as I have a pig tail on both sides of the string. I have no doubt that I can power 108 nodes with a single power supply; I was able to power 100 nodes last year, I don't think adding another 8 nodes will cause any issues.

I have many strings of 120 12v nodes and they work fine.

Would like to know how they work out for you.  The thing that bothers me about those ones is no warranty.  At least Ray Wu's promotional ones had a one year on the $199.45 1000 I picked up last week.

I emailed Ray just the other day to see if he offers bulk items and he told me they do not offer strings in bulk due to being unable to test the lights with 1000 pixels on a single string. I'm looking further into other stores that offer them in 1000 count strings.
