Need help with the new Pi Zero W. Can't get WiFi to work.
« on: March 13, 2017, 12:51:18 AM »
Got a new Pi Zero W to play with, but unable to get the FPP WiFi (wlan0) to be recognized. Is there a known or suggest fix.  Or do I need to wait for a new FPP driver

From what I can find, for the Zero W to even work properly it requires version 2017-02-16 Raspbian or NOOBS 2.2 which have an updated kernel. So it's likely that until those kernel updates make it into FPP, you're not going to have much luck with FPP on a zero w.

tjames, I read your statement as the FPP won't run on the Pi Zero W......but it does.  I pulled the MicroSD and Zip Drive from my Pi2B.  I added and configured an output for a ESPixelStick  and ran the test screen "Enable Test Mode:" and got lights.  I couldn't run a sequence because the big test bench was shut down.

I was able to bounce thru the menus and re-load and existing sequence.  FPP seems to be full functioning....just the W part of this Zero isn't loading....no wlan0
I guess I'll need to use the EDIMAX til Zero W's WiFi drivers are included

The zero wireless probably needs the new kernel and firmware.  FPP currently uses a kernel and firmware from Raspbian Jessie while the rest of the OS is Raspbian Wheezy.  This means you can't just run a rpi-update to pull in the newer firmware and kernel.

I doubt we will release a new OS image until v2.0 but I can look at making a script to download and install the new kernel on an existing SD image similar to what we did for the Pi 3 B when it came out.

Thanks Chris for the reply.  Any target date for v2.0?
I can wait, have several Pi's.  Just like to play with the new stuff.

No target date currently, Real Life has gotten in the way the past month with my son's surgery and a couple sick kids, snow days, etc., so I haven't got much coding done.  I'm slowly getting more time and returning to things though.

Son's surgery, ouch! Hopping this was something simple and normal.
Yes, family first, always - haha, v2.0 before the youngest is 18, please.

He is 6 and had tonsils and adenoids removed at the same time and tubes put in his ears.  I think it took him twice as long to recover as the doctor estimated, but we were expecting that.  The recovery included a few day stay in the hospital a week after the outpatient surgery.  He wasn't eating enough.  February was a bit busy for us....  :)   Almost back to normal around here.  I finally got my snowflakes off the front of the house this past weekend, I am sure my neighbor's are happy.  :)

Chris, I hope your son is doing better. This snow thing is getting old. And it certainly hasn't warmed up much but Sunday looks like could be spring like on the coast.

I have Version: v1.9-48-gdef33af working on the Pi Zero W I got a couple of days ago. The build process worked as expected should. The UI doesn't have the fancy Zero icon at the top right but apart from that, all the standard stuff seems to be work pretty well.

That is, except for the onboard wifi. I thought it was the same as the PI 3's internal wifi but I can't see it in the UI, and have not been able to enable it using the command line. Any chance you could give me a few pointers on what I should try.

I believe the Zero W is supposed to have the same wifi as the Pi 3 B but I think it still requires a new firmware and/or kernel.  I have a Zero W in my office now, thanks to madsci1016.  I am going to take a look and see about making a script that would install the newer kernel and firmware needed to get wireless working.

I have not touched anything, another busy weekend with family.

Did you install the FPP v1.8 SD image or did you install Raspbian and then install FPP via our FPP_Install.sh script?

Never mind. My son plugged in the EDIMAX and I didn't see it.  Yes wlan0 on EDIMAX not built-in.  Sorry.

I have a Zero W in my office now, thanks to madsci1016.

You're welcome!

And yeah even the raspian branded SD cards that shipped with the pis didn't have support for wireless out of the box. Had to pull the newest noobs installer image to play with the W.
