BBG to drive ws2811 pixels directly off GPIO?
« on: April 20, 2017, 10:13:02 PM »
I have a SanDevices E6804 and a Raspberry Pi B v3, but I see in the wiki that the BBG or BBBWL can drive up to 48 strings of WS2811 directly off the GPIO.  How well does this work?  I'm creating a beer bottle grid wall in my backyard with about 400 pixels.  I was going to use the e6804 for it but if the BBG or BBBWL will work just as well for that purpose, it would be a cheaper option and fewer components.  Then I can re-purpose the e6804 for use in my christmas display.
Thanks

A Pi with 1 of the multitude of Pi pixel capes like my rPi-28D or the 1 Dave Pitts makes can easily do 400 pixels. They can each do 800-1000 pixels per output and a Pi plus cape is probably cheaper than a BBG. As far as running off the BBG goes the main issue is that the output logic on BBG is 3.3V and pixel input is 5V. The level is just borderline at the best of times and if wanting to go any distance at all you're better off putting in a buffer to go from 3.3V to 5V logic levels.

Daves 1 is the PiCap and there's links on forum to it. https://www.pixelcontroller.com/store/index.php?id_product=47&controller=product
There's a few others around. Some may be "pre-sale" ones. I don't really keep track of all the different ones.
