Captain Murdoch is now the Captain of FPP
« on: March 16, 2014, 06:44:34 PM »
Captain Murdoch has been the driving force of most FPP enhancements since October of last year. His architecture and programming skills are far beyond mine. It only makes sense to allow him to become the official project leader and "Captain" of FPP. So all purposed new features and upgrades should be discussed with him.

This will allow me to continue developing Falcon hardware and firmware with the comfort of knowing FPP is in great hands.

Thanks Captain for your leadership and desire to make FPP the new player of choice.  :)

Thanks Captain for your leadership and desire to make FPP the new player of choice.  :)

Thanks David, for all you and the other developers have done and are doing and also for the vote of confidence.  If people thought 2013 was a great year for Falcon, just wait till they see where we are at before the end of 2014 on both the hardware and software side of things. :)

To give people an idea of what we're targeting for the next release of FPP, here's a rundown of some of the major enhancements or features already in various stages of development ranging from 'complete and tested' to 'just being started'.

- The return of MP3 audio file support
- Video playback synchronized with sequence data
- New data output methods (in addition to current FPD and E1.31 in v0.2.0)
  - Lynx Pixelnet USB dongle
  - DMX Pro compatible USB dongles
  - DMX Open compatible USB dongles
  - Renard
- Channel remapping.  Remap one or more channels during output to avoid resequencing
at the last minute due to device failure or other unplanned changes.
- Logging optimizations.  Multiple logging levels with the ability to change from the default
level to debug level and back without restarting the daemon.  The new default logging
level will greatly reduce the amount of writes going to the USB flash drives during normal
   operations.
- Master/Slave synchronization between multiple Pi's for supporting higher channel counts
- Memory mapped channel overlays to allow external scripts to overlay data onto the
channel data being output, such as a countdown timer on a matrix.
- Channel Test Mode, allowing the user to toggle channels on or off to test lights, cables, etc..

and probably some other things that I've already forgotten about, and maybe a few more that other developers are working on but that I don't want to speak for them on their behalf about.

I don't want to commit to a release date yet, but would like to target somewhere in the next 4-6 weeks if thing work out.

2014 is shaping up to be a great year.

2013 was a great year....it was my first year into this hobby, seeing the continued development in all areas (hardware and software is simply awesome!).

Below is the order of importance for those new features to me based on experiences I had last year and what I want to do this year:)

- Channel Test Mode, allowing the user to toggle channels on or off to test lights, cables, etc..
- Logging optimizations.
- Video playback synchronized with sequence data
- Channel remapping.
- Master/Slave synchronization between multiple Pi's for supporting higher channel counts
-  a countdown timer on a matrix.

Cheers - and thank you for the continued development!!

to the captain, mykroft, dave, materdaddy (and any others i missed)
it has been simply amazing to see what you continue to get out of a $40 computer. The first public show of the pi player was at the academy in July 2013. When we go again to the Academy, I believe that Capt Murdoch will be giving the class on the pi player. We will have a virtual birthday party in july.

with video now being added, the options for our shows keep growing.

thanks and congratulations capt on your assignment!

Congratulations, Captain -- we are all in great hands!

Falcon once again proves that leadership comes through the involvement of many talented people.

Agreed!  Congrats to CaptainM, and thanks for all the collaboration that's been happening here.

I still have a dedicated show computer, but am seriously thinking I can migrate to FPP this year without much of a problem.  Since I've almost eliminated the Animated Lighting AC controllers from my setup, I think I can go fully E1.31/DMX for good.
