PiCap DMX/LOR power requirements

If all I want to drive from the PiCap is DMX (LOR actually), can I just draw power from the Raspberry Pi (v3+) GPIO pins, or do I need to supply 5v to the PiCap as well?

We did this for a couple of years.  Fed the picap 12vdc, and allowed it to power the RPi under it.  Worked just fine.

Sequencers: Vixen3 and xLights
Players: FPP and xSchedule Controllers:  Renards - SS24/SS16; E1.31 - San Devices E682 - Falcon F16, F4, F48 - J1Sys - DIYLEDExpress E1.31 Bridges.  Much more!

If using 12vdc, use a RasPi 3B (not a 3B+) with the PiCap for now. The voltage regulator is marginal for the higher amperage needs of the 3B+

If using a 5vdc supply (jumper layout on the underside of the PiCap), it will be fine if you use a 3A (15w) or higher supply.

I'll be replacing that regulator on my existing PiCaps.

I was able to get it to work with USB power to the Raspberry Pi (3 B) using a 2.4a power supply.
