E1.31 Universe Setup Question

As an simple example, let's say you have 2 elements, both with 50 nodes.  Is it more efficient to define 1 universe that covers both elements or split into 2 universes, 1 for each element?


Eg.



Element 1: 50 nodes, Ch 1-150
Element 2: 50 nodes, Ch 151-300


E1.31 Configuration 1
   Universe 1:  1-300


- or -


E1.31 Configuration 2
   Universe 1: 1-150
   Universe 2: 151-300


Simple example, but as you scale, better to define just enough universes @ 512 channels each to cover you channel counts or define a universe for each element that covers that element's channels?

Generally speaking, its more efficient to make your Universes as full as possible.  Certainly from a networking perspective, fewer large universes is better than more small universes.   An E1.31 universe is just a "container" to send channels across the network.  The more channels you put in one container, and thus the fewer containers you have to send, the more efficient your network will be.

However, from a human standpoint, its sometimes easier to group them more logically (e.g. by area, models, or controller ports) and some people like to leave gaps for easy growth (not necessary, but can be convenient).  So the ultimate answer is up to you how you want to balance between maximum network efficiency and human ease-of-use
