Beginner level learning for PiCap with xLights
« on: January 17, 2019, 09:31:50 AM »
Hi Everyone,
Thanks to this forum I just got my PiCap with 50 12V Pixel lights to work. By work I mean I can test them through the Falcon site and that's pretty much it.
Now I want to build a simply sequence just for this one string of 50 Pixel lights and see how it looks. This will be my first time building a sequences on xLights. Hence I'm looking for some blogs or preferable videos on how I can do that? I'm interested in learning things such as-
- How to select that one Pixel Lights string to build a sequence for? How can I make a chase lights for that one Pixel light string, etc?
- Do I run the sequence from xLights or do I import the MP3 music file and sequence into the Raspberry Pi? If I do then where in the Pi do I import it? Any specific folder?
- Once imported, how does it run? Automatically when it is powered on?

Once I get the above two figured out I wanted to learn how to make it standalone i.e. have the Pixel lights run standalone without connected to a laptop so that I could added to my indoor Christmas tree.

Thanks in advance to all. This forum has helped me alot and I do plan on donating.

Update- After reading up on some other forum posts plus watching a few other videos I was able to get the sequence build and uploaded to my PiCap. I even got the schedule to work which is awesome.

When I uploaded the fseq file, I assume it goes to the PiCap Micro SD file? Does that mean it will still work with my laptop shut down? I haven't tested it yet.

Yes FPP is stand alone.  Build a playlist and hit play on the status screen or just build a schedule as you've already found.  No laptop needed.

DChristian - I am in the same boat you were in. I just got my PiCap connected to my test string of 50 lights and I can test them through FPP. This part works great.
In your post you mentioned reading some other forum posts and watching some videos. Would you mind sharing some links of the pages that helped you the most?
I appreciate it!!

Heres the Xlights 2018 beginners seminar: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PeUQoBiQyUg .  Its 2+ hours long.

Heres a quick start video for Xlights: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kdP-_99DB7M .  Only about 8 minutes.

LOL. I'm doing the same thing.  I posted this video about getting my PiCap to work https://youtu.be/AhQGcxrmdHs and my next video was going to be about a simple xlights demo on a 50 pixel string.
