Dimming within a string?
« on: February 05, 2019, 12:07:02 PM »
Can I dim only SOME pixels in a string?  Say I have a 85 Pixel string. I want to dim 1-30 and 36 through 85...leaving 31 - 35 bright.   Is that possible?

Yes. Create a virtual string.

Doing at a Virtual String will work, but it will always be more dim (until you edit the virtual string, at least)

If you are using xLights, you can create a Sub-model of that string and control it that way (dimmer or brighter).

It all kind of depends on WHY you want those pixels to be dimmer.

Drew, on first reading I was wondering if you are talking about a string of "dumb pixels", or a string of "smart pixels".
Sequencers: Vixen3 and xLights
Players: FPP and xSchedule Controllers:  Renards - SS24/SS16; E1.31 - San Devices E682 - Falcon F16, F4, F48 - J1Sys - DIYLEDExpress E1.31 Bridges.  Much more!

Smart pixels.  I am 3d printing stars to go on top of my pixel poles.  All of my lights run typically at 30% brightness.  Due to the thickness of the star - I am fairly sure I'll need to run 50 - 70% on the 7 pixels contained in the star in order to get a "consistent" look across all props / pixels.

So, to answer your original question - Yes you can dim individual pixels.  It takes a bit of planning, but you can do it.  Note that the method would be different than using the dimming option in the controller.  You would have to do it from the sequencer, or if you have a controller such as the Falcon series - you can use the virtual system to isolate the pixels you want to dim.  And like any time you dim at the controller, this would be the "norm" for those pixels.
