p5 panels with pi zero w
« on: March 16, 2019, 07:29:11 AM »
Hello all!

First off I'd like to thank the developers of the Falcon Player, they did a fantastic job with this software.

Now onto my issue.  I am building a 2X2 P5 matrix and it works great on a pi 3 (driving with a pi hat using 2 outputs).  No flickering or ghosting, gpio slowdown set to 2.

On a pi zero w, I set gpio to pi zero and get some ghosting and flickering, and the sequence plays a little choppy.  I have tried other gpio settings which fix the ghosting and flickering, but then the sequence runs slowly.  I also shutdown the browser after setting changes but this doesn't correct the issue.  Also, I'm using the same SD card tested with the pi 3, FPP v2.6.

Am I missing some settings with the pi zero or does it not have the horsepower to drive a p5 matrix?

Not sure I can help your issue, but I do run Pi Zero W in my 2x2 P5 boxes.  I have problems with Pi 3, so I use the Zero's.
Could it be your hardware.  I use Ron Holiday Pi Matrix or POPS Pixel Matrix hats....

I don't think it's the hardware, as it's working fine with the pi 3.  How many outputs are you using with the zero?

Any ghosting/flickering with your setup?

none....

on my 2X2, I run the smaller pixel SMD2121 P5 panels on the Pi Zero's
Larger panels I use the SMD3528 P5 panels and BeagleBones
Haven't tried my SMD3528's on the PI Zero.

No issues.

The one thing it might be is my home spun matrix adapter that drives the p5 panels directly from the pi's gpio pins.  I ordered one of Ron's pi matrix adapters with the buffered outputs, so we'll see if this makes a difference.

It's crazy, works perfectly with the pi 3, but not the zero.  Perhaps this batch of p5 panels I have just doesn't care for the pi zero.
