Cannot get BBB to boot from SD card for v2.7
« on: July 15, 2019, 06:47:02 AM »
I know this will be an "operator error" situation. I have tried this on 2 different BBB's with the same results.

I'm trying to upgrade my BBB's from v1.9 to 2.7. Both BBB's are running v1.9 from the eMMC. I have burned the image onto a 16gb SD card using balenaEtcher (this was done after using SD Card Formatter with a complete format). After inserting it into the BBB, I hold in the S2 button, power it up and wait. Unlike the video instruction, the 4 lights do not light up, only 2 do, then they start blinking briefly, then 1 lights goes solid. It stays that way indefinitely. When I release the S2, it will load in the previous v1.9 (whether released af the two solid lights blink briefly or after the one light stays solid).

Like I said, I've tried this on two different BBB's, with the exact same results, so clearly I'm doing something wrong. I loaded 2.5 on two Pi's previously, and that went fine, just having trouble with the BBB's.

Any thoughts?

Chris

Just a thought, you probably got it right, but didn't mention it so I gotta ask....

Are you using a different image file for the BBB than what you used for the Pi?   The two hardware platforms have two different images:

For BBB   use FPP-v2.7.2-BBB.img.zip
For RasPi use FPP-v2.7.2-Pi.img.zip

Current files are at https://github.com/FalconChristmas/fpp/releases

Thanks for catching that, and yes, I did use the BBB image.

If the BBB ever had a 2.0 or greater version, then you do not have to hold down the S2 button. Based on your response to pixelpuppy you might have this resolved?

They both have 1.9, not 2x...

It is not resolved. I was indicating to him that I did indeed use the BBB image.

It is resolved, though I don't know why...

I figured I would try using v2.0, and it loaded fine. I then tried v2.7 and it worked as well.

Oddly and unexplained, it seems that persistence is useful.

The BBBs are "supposed to" look for boot info on the SSD instead of the eMMC memory on the board.
The S2 button is "supposed to" force that. But it doesn't always work.

BUT - once it does work, it seems to work from them on. I've experienced it. Others have, too.
