I tried.  For the rest of you; this is your warning to buy quality cables wherever you get them.

Thanks for the heads-up Jeffl!!!

I hope this isn't too off base for this set of posts--I remember some posts some time ago where some folks discussed solid versus stranded cat 5 (I think) cables but I can't find them now.  I think that was on Falcon, but it may have been over at DIYC.  ARRGH.  Can ya'll recommend what to go with?  I was thinking about going with stranded shielded twisted pair, but it looks like the unshielded twisted pair is a bit less expensive.  Don't want to spend extra $$ if there is no reason to....   Figured I would ask the brain trust!  Thanks in advance.  I plan to buy the pre-made cat5 with connectors on both ends then cutting off one end to solder onto my micro controllers.   I will be using a DLA active hub driven by an FPD and an FPP.

I use unshielded. I also use solid a lot. If you coil it right for storage, wire breakage hasn't been a problem.

Ask a Roadie about coiling microphone cables. You do a back and forth method.  Never use the "around the hand and elbow" method.

Thanks JonB.  I was taught that at a church I attended where we set up & took down every week--we were meeting in a movie theater.  They taught me NOT TO do the elbow wrap thing!  I have to admit I still do that some with my 120V extension cords, but in general I do some type of figure eight or at least a big diameter loop.

So shielded/unshielded doesn't really make any difference for what we are doing?  I am sooo used to seeing TSP in industrial settings (I work in nuclear plants....) to assure noise doesn't impact signals.

THANKS

My brother tried that once helping put thing away.  Needless to say his attention to detail is on the other end of the spectrum that mine.  It now takes me forever to tear down because every cord and cable get looped up naturally so it's in good shape and ready to be used again next year.

When I hear or see people do the elbow wrap I get furious.  >:( Even when it's not my cords because they are instantly shot in my mind.
