No Blinky Flashy At All
« on: August 08, 2015, 12:18:11 AM »
I set up my second Falcon-16 v1 to some burn-in testing like in my previous thread (http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,2698.0.html).

However, when I set the jumper to Test mode, and power the whole thing up, I get all the green power LEDs on the board, but the pixels don't light up.

I tried hooking it up to my computer and send it a Pixelnet signal, but the blue LED doesn't light up like my first board did.

Any suggestions?

P.S. Even though I've plugged in only 2 of them so far, I did notice that all three of my boards don't have the back of the electronic component labelled "VR1" touching the circuit board allowing for perhaps a bit more cooling. Should I be concerned? Or should I be of the train of thought that it's exposed to more air that way?  ???

With a board non responsive/no test mode I would reflash pic.  My VR1 is same way.  Dave shipped the heat sink but I never added it.  I think it might be due to shipping.  If BC is warm as Cali I might be tempted to throw some heat sink compound on it and add it with a screw.

The first thing I would do is check how I had the lights connected to the F16.  There just seems to be too many color combos to usage without much consistency across vendors.  Look at the board +/- and data connections and double check your light connections.

Reflashing the PIC worked. Thanks.

I didn't get a heatsink with my Falcon-16. Did other people here get one?

I suppose I'll be ordering a few when I order the parts for my Falcon16-B.

My two from the recent COOP have one on the left regulator but not on the right.  I think that was the recommended config from the beginning.

If you do add a metal heat sink under the regulator, be sure to secure it so that it can't slide down and contact the 3 electrical leads. Usually, there is enough contact with the board that a finned heat sink isn't needed if you just use a small machine bolt and nut.

Don't worry about it. Hopefully you get this message in time (I haven't been here daily lately).  I can afford the extra $1.20 on my next Mouser order. Either way, the address you have is to my brother's place in Seattle and I live in Canada so it will be a while until I get it anyway.
