New AliExpress find - 12v WS2811 pixel strings
« on: September 18, 2015, 09:33:13 AM »

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Wholesale-50pcs-12mm-WS2811-IC-Green-wire-Led-pixel-RGB-Digital-Module-String-IP68-waterproof-DC12v/32441372373.html

Typically I like to purchase nodes around the $0.30-0.32/ea including shipping.  This deal puts them at $0.215/ea.

I ordered yesterday and shipping notice was this morning, and i'll update this thread after receiving and reviewing, but thought i'd mention it here as it's the best deal on pixel strings i've ever seen; hope that old adage "if it's too good to be true..." doesn't hold here!

I'm assuming you picked up a few hundred of these at least to get it down to that price per pixel.  It's a shame the deal is only good for four more days, so no time for you to get to test and let the rest of us know whether it is worth it or not.

Yes, I purchased 1000 nodes ($215 with shipping), which is typically how I purchase in order to offset shipping charges.  This is my first order of 12v pixels, but the next best price was $329 for 1000 with green wire. (RayWu was about $355 or so, IIRC)  The plan is to move existing 5v strings into the house on a "holiday tree", and replace/lengthen outside strings with these new ones, eliminating buck converter issues that I purchased in a second batch last year...

True about the timing though.  A thought of overbuying and offering the extra's passed through my head, but alas, i'm not in the pixel business, and didn't want the headaches associated with possible issues.

Looks like some vendor may have overproduced and you get the benefit. If the pictures are accurate, they are very nicely made.

Should this be a concern?
" Compared to our other 20mm LED dots, these are diffused 8mm LEDs so they are not as bright but they color mix a little nicer."

Just wondering becuase I am tempted to pick up a bunch, if I can;t get to them this year I will use them next year.

diffused 8mm is the standard for all of these "bullet" type nodes.  I've never seen the 20mm one's referred to. The body is designed to fit into a 12mm hole.  My guess is that the description's, specs and photos were copied from another listing.  It looks like this guy lowered his prices to sell so he can "get in the game".  That's what i'm telling myself anyway.  :)

All I can do now it wait and see...

Is $75 for shipping for that a good price? Ray used to always be in the $40-50 range. I'm outside my light budget this week, I'm going to contact the seller and haggle a bit on shipping cost and see if I can get that deal for the next 2-3 weeks vs 4 days. Will report back!!

A recent order which was only 100 pixels, but a lot of waterproof connectors and extension cables had shipping of $84.  Those darn wires weigh to much, we need to put them on a diet.  Would that we could.

Never hurts to ask.  I'm not a haggler, and thus far have had mostly good dealings with my orders.  I'm also not a big complainer.  If I have a few pixels that are no good, or the epoxy isn't going to protect the pixel, I just make sure I account for that when I order and will fix things myself.  Last thing I want to do is ship anything back to China, or fight over who is going to pay for it.  This can be said for shipping.  I never really consider the price of the item, or the shipping, by itself.  It's the "Delivered to your door" price i'm interested in.  It's very prevalent on AliExpress for an item to have a low price, only to have the outrageous shipping charge make the overall delivered price more comparable.  Rays price for shipping is $91 for 1000 pixels, while this guy is $71.  I never bothered to actually see what DHL shipping of a package like this would cost, but it might be enlightening to do so.  At any rate this guys price for pixels is $7.23/ 50px string, compared to Ray's $13/ 50px string...

Until I get the items and see if they are what he says they are, I won't really know, so i'm back to... waiting patiently.  :)

Invent "Copper Air Wire" !  ::)   I think Dirk sells those wireless extension cords on his site, but they are expensive!   ;D

It's still cheaper to order wire abroad and ship it half way around the world than to go into Lowe's and pick up a spool of something.  It's crazy.

Looks like $340 will be the price for 25 strings or just less than $13.6 per string (includes shipping) or 27cents per pixel which is close to what you have paid all along. Anyways, if the deal is still on at the end of the week I may pick up $200 or so worth of strings as I have those new mini trees and coro canes to fill up.

I guess that takes care of extending the sale.
