I am considering those for connecting to a Pi Zero and sewing into clothing.

Those, or a similar style of ws2812. The 2812 definitely has the chip integrated on the back.

I got some of these.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/252117580861?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&var=550959978704&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I knew they would be small, but they are only 1 cm across.
Just slightly larger than the 5050 chip attached to them.

I guess I will have to sew or staple down the wires soldered to them to hold them in place.

Not exactly sure what you meant by "definitely on the back"

The 2812 package definitely has a 2811 chip and RGB LEDs all mounted on the same side...

There was an earlier version with the chip on the back. Looks like they have miniaturized.

They were a normal 5050 on the front.
