The word universe is confusing.  Is universe another word for controller?

A universe is DMX-512 (Digital Multiplex) termanology. 1 universe is 1 group of 512 dmx channels. RGB pixels use 3 channels per led. 170 rgb pixels would be 510 channels or 1 universe.

There is also a pixelnet universe of 4096 channels.  That is used with pixelnet devices like the F16v1 and F8 and Lynx controllers.

Personally, I find it less confusing to just deal with absolute addresses.  But then I don't use controllers that require universe designation.  Falcons do not require universe info, but can use either universe or absolute.

A universe is the maximum number of channels a specific protocol can deliver and as seen above, that number varies between protocols.  Do not confuse that with controllers because while some are universe specific, others are not.

That depends on the controller.  If it is an E1.31 controller, then it uses DMX for its input and in that case, you will need to define E1.31 universes (blocks of data) in FPP for output and define the same universes in the controllers to receive that data and send it to the correct ports.
