A new way to drive panels (P10, P6 etc)
« on: December 27, 2016, 06:00:57 PM »
In my 2016 show I have driven my panel matrix using LINSN panel controllers rather than BBB/PI based controllers.

I've started to document my method over on the AusChristmasLighting forum:

Lots of benefits, one being that you can use almost any sort of panels not just P10 indoor 1/8 scan panels.

I think that using the DVI/HDMI cards has benefits and they have been discussed before here a couple times.  I think the Pi and BBB still have their uses in certain cases especially if you are driving the Linsn card with a Pi anyway.  I purchased a ColorLight receiver board and am planning to write a FPP channel output for it to allow people to get some of the best of both worlds.  The Pi/BBB boards will also still be easier for dynamic text I believe.

I look forward to following your thread though.  :)

Curious as to why you say this?  I am using pixel overlays on the virtual matrix quite nicely.

Ah, you are using a virtual matrix.  :) I figured most would be using the mode where the sender is sampling only a small portion of the display which also makes video playback harder.  If you are using a virtual matrix then you have it just as easy as a real matrix.

Does the Linsn card auto scale the whole HDMI output resolution down to the matrix resolution?

No - 1 pixel on HDMI output = 1 pixel on matrix so need to get the resolution right on the HDMI being careful of overscan etc.

I have a few more questions, but I nstead of asking questions here, I will read the thread over there and ask there if still needed.  :)
