DMX Fire Machine Setup Help
« on: October 09, 2018, 04:16:10 PM »
So I got a couple of DMX 512 fire machines today, the accompanying adapters and some cat 5e cable. i'm wanting to run each on a separate port on the f16v2. unfortunately i've never worked with DMX at all. I've read through some various posts and watched some youtube videos but the interface is quite different now for the controller.

Any help to get me started would be appreciated.

thanks!

Have you read the falcon controller user manual?  It tells you the DMX pinouts and then all you've got to do is map the proper channels you're programming in your sequencer to the DMX ports you're using on the falcon controller.  Let me know if you have any further questions.  I'm running two LOR controllers and one fog machine, all dmx, off of the 3 DMX ports on my falcon controller and it works flawlessly.

I have not but I'll see if I can find it. I know I need to plug then in to 2 of the 4 DMX ports but clueless from there. I setup two DMX models in xlights as single channel flood lights (didn't know what others model to use).

I poked around the DMX output settings but not sure what I'm doing

Found the manual and read it over. i have the jumpers set to DMX and will likely use ports 2 and 3. i don't follow Table 3-1: Serial Pinouts or what it's trying to portray. :/

ok...so just updating this as i go, lol.

i have the fire machines connected to dmx port 2 and 3 respectively. in the controller dashboard, i have the serial outputs set as default (output 2 starts at 513 and output 3 starts at 1025). When i go to Status and put the controller into test mode, the fire machines kick on.

Now i just need to figure out how top map it xlights. so far, in xlights setup i added 2 E1.31 configurations:

E131 > Controller IP > Universe 2 > 512 Channels > Active Yes

E131 > Controller IP > Universe 3 > 512 Channels > Active Yes

Not sure what to do from here.

so here's what i've been able to do in xlights so far...

Setup Tab
---
E131 > Controller IP > Universe 2 > 512 Channels > Channels 1 to 512 > Active: Yes

Layout Tab
---
DMX Model > Style: Flood Light > 4 channels > #2:1 Start Channel

Now when i open up Tools > Test the following occurs:
- Nothing happens if I click channel 1 to 4 by itself
- If i leave channel 1 checked and then check channel 3, i get a quick fireball
- If i leave channel 1 and 4 checked, then check channel 3 I get a pillar of fire

Channel 2 seems to do nothing and seems to have no effect on any other combination.

So here's what i figured (I think) in case anyone else does a search:

In XLights, setup a DMX Model (i used the floodlight) and set it to 4 channels. Then in your sequence use the DMX effect and you can adjust the channels accordingly:

- Channel 1 & 2: Nothing
- Channel 3: [0-109] Off, [110-255] On
- Channel 4: 1 second flame, [1-255] 1-3 seconds of flame (7 bits = ~.1s)

Okay, so i thought i had this figured out. Sadly I don't. Only Fire Machine 1 (FM1) is working. Fire Machine 2 (FM2) is not. Below is my setup with differences highlighted. :/

In the setup tab of XLights i have these two entries:
FM1 - E131 | Controller IP | Universe 2 | Num Channels 512 | xLights/FPP Mapping 1 to 512 | Active Yes
FM2 - E131 | Controller IP | Universe 3 | Num Channels 512 | xLights/FPP Mapping 513 to 1024 | Active Yes

In the layout tab of xLights i have the following config:
FM1 - # Channels 4 | Red 1, Green 2, Blue 3, White 4 | Start Channel #2:1
FM2 - # Channels 4 | Red 1, Green 2, Blue 3, White 4 | Start Channel #3:1

On the actual Fire Machines themselves, each has their DMX Switch address set to 1. FM1 is connected to DMX2 and FM2 is connected to DMX3 on the F16v2. The pinouts on the controller are set to DMX. I've changed nothing in the Falcon controller settings in the web dashboard at this point and I'm not sure what to do. I feel like my issue has to be the fact that FM2's xLights/FPP Mapping is 513 to 1024 but i'm not real sure.

anyone have any ideas?

It's a chinese model from ebay. but i've been able to get it working using 2 channels (one for the sparker and one for the gas/solenoid). That's not my issue, per se. My issue is that i can get both machines to work on dmx port 2 but can't get either to work on dmx port 3.

why do you need 2 universe you can run both off one port it only take a few channels to control in DMX

Agreed, since you are only using a max of 8 DMX channels you only need 1 port. Set Flame unit 1 to a starting channel of 513 and set flame unit 2 to a starting channel of 517. Then set the channels in Xlights accordingly.

i'm new to dmx so i don't entirely follow. i'm using 2 ports because i'm running a cat5 cable to opposite ends of the yard where each fire machine is.

On the fire machine don't they have a DMX in and DMX out. Go in to fire machine from controller and out to in second fire machine
