I believe Capn has them able to run 1,000 pixels per port (2,000 total).  I've run 600+ before with no problems.

I tested this a couple years ago and things worked well up to about 800/port. I believe that was with a Pi 3.

Seems like this question has been coming up a lot lately  :)

Earlier versions of FPP v1.x had a soft upper limit of 999, but it was really only a GUI textbox limit of 3 digits and not a technical limit.  Quite a while ago, that restriction was removed and you can have pixel strings of over 1000 per port.

Note that your sequence timing (frame rate) has some bearing on string length (due to ws2811 bit timing and required minimum frame gap):

25ms = 40fps = ~800 pixels per string
33ms = 30fps = ~1100 pixels per string
50ms = 20fps = ~1600 pixels per string
100ms=10fps = ~3200 pixels per string
xLights and Vixen3 for sequencing / FPP for scheduling and playing / Falcon controllers for pixels / homemade controllers for everything else
