I'm using home assistant and i've managed to get my FPP talking to HASS but it's not reporting the status, only the CPU.

Can you point me in the right direction to where I can get it to reporrt the FPP status?

Install the 'Falcon Player' integration in HA.  It is available in HACS.  I installed it manually, but am using the integration to control several FPP instances.  The integration is not by the FPP developers, it is by a 3rd party, but has been working well for me.
