Title: controller and design ideas for RV pixel light show
Post by: Nburlarley on January 25, 2021, 05:06:26 PM
So I usually go camping at least once a year with some family in the summer at a campground. We always have a RV and we usually put lights on it. (not Christmas lights because it's summer) So I thought for this year it would be cool to add some pixels and put a speaker out so people walking by could see it. The only problem is I'm not quite sure what to use. This is my second year with pixels and I thought maybe I could use a f16v3 and pi i used last year, but that would be overkill. I would want to keep it simple with less than 300 pixels, 2 different pixel ports at max, no power injection if possible, probably 10 or 20% brightness (to respect other people right next to us), and I'd need a way to hook up a speaker. There is also no wifi so I'm not sure how I would set it up to use it (maybe oled screen?). I thought about using a rpi-28d but doesn't that need wifi? and is audio disabled? I thought about setting it up before I leave at my house with wifi, but I'd want to manually stop and start it at random times. I would also if possible prefer not to use any boscoyo strip because I have no where to mount it (not even sure how I am gonna mount the pixels yet, maybe I'm going crazy but I'm thinking about pixel strip!). So I'd appreciate any help with any ideas on how to set this up. Thanks!

Forgot to say that I would already have all the sequences done and ready before getting to the campsite.

Just do the pi and v3.  You will be able to control the show via the tethering wifi option and you will be able to have audio as you know it although based on my camping experiences, just lights would probably be a better option.

I do just that and in fact our campground has a christmas in july week.  I take some of our stuff and do a small show.  I also set up 4 other areas of the campground, it is a big hit.  I use pi's to run the show.  The controllers I use are an F48 (for mine and my brothers site) a F4 for the campground office, a F4 for another location and a F16 for another area that contains 2 small mega trees.

Thank you jnealand I think I may do that. Just didn't want to bring a ton of stuff
I know regular lights would be better but where's the fun in that!

Wow that sounds like a lot! The campers must love it. Thanks for your help.

Yeah, It is a great gauge how the actual holiday season will go.  I test some sequences, any new props and and a few other things.  This year I knew the holiday season would be great as the camping show was a huge hit.  Over the weekend we had well over 200 people parade by (social distanced of course) It was a precurser of what was going to happen a few years later.
