Bench testing pixels

What are you using to bench test pixels?  I have both WS2511 bullets and strips along with TM1804 (nodes used with DIYLA) and would like to bench test various nodes that have failed.  For the most part I've cut them out and thrown them in a bag.  Would also like to use it to burn in some new pixels as well.


I tried one of the cheap 2511 controllers from eBay, but could never get it to work.

I use an SP105e controller for testing. It supports many 3-wire and 4-wire pixel types (8bit).

It connects to my Smartphone (Android or iPhone) via Bluetooth for many patterns and speed and intensity.
Whatever setting you leave it at becomes the Power-on default.

DC 5v to 24v support.

I also like the SP105e controller. Super simple and foolproof.  Plus it's cheap enough that I can take it all over and not worry about spilling something on it or the kids breaking it by accident. I use a little 75w PS with it.

Follow on question... What type of connection are you using to test pixels with this setup? Some kind of bread board? A strip terminal? Just tying the wires together?

At one point, I had 3 different style connectors on the SP105e. A Ray Wu 3pin waterproof, a Pixabulb waterproof and a JST connector. I just crammed 3 wires into each terminal.

I only used one at a time   Sorry, but didn't take a picture.

The SP105e has clearly labeled V+, Clock, Data and Ground compression terminals.

I am mostly ray but also some Diyled so I also just swap the pigtail in that I need.  If you have strings without connectors you could always cut some alligator clips or use alternate methods such as compression speaker terminals to connect them quickly without constant screwing the connector.

Got it today... worked like a champ for WS2811 nodes and strips and my 1804 nodes.  Was a smaller package than I expected.


I hooked the lights right up to the device but am looking at using a terminal connector.

This is a great idea. I think I can 3d print a case to go around the unit and mount a 4 pin speaker connector row on the case.
