Quick poll! What connector type, male or female, do you use for the start of your pixel strand? Is there a "standard" for pixels that come pre-wired with pigtail connectors?

There is no standard.

I use some Ray Wu waterproof connectors  (female is "output")
I use some smaller diameter green ones that came on my Pixabulbs (female is "output")
I use a few (and getting fewer) JST connectors (all manufactured strings that arrive with JST, male is the "output")

and on many, I don't have any threaded connector, but just direct to a 3 or 4 conductor green plug for Falcon boards. (Euro connectors is what David calls them)  This avoids the problem altogether.

You start a strand with the Male connector

Much like any other electrical connection, the female connector supplies the signal and power and the male connects to it.
