Can Diff Receivers get Data through Wifi?

Hey all,

I've been using my differential receiver board for the past 3 years connected to my expansion board via a 100 ft CAT5 cable.

Just curious...

Can I use an FPP slave (Rasp Pi) connected to the diff receiver through CAT5 but connected to my network through Wifi? (Getting rid of the 100 Foot CAT5?)

I've browsed around but I can't seem to find an answer that directly answers this...

I suspect the answer is No as there is no support for differential receivers in FPP.  The support resides in the firmware of the F16v2/3 and the F48.  You can put a PiCap on the Pi and and run that in slave mode.  I have several of those.  You will only get 2 outputs, although you can get more nodes on those 2 outputs than most folks seem to have on a receiver port.  Chaining your props and using a PiCap might get you what you want.  I have some with 600 nodes on a port for window matrices.

Thanks for the reply. Okay, maybe I'll try that then. I don't need it for many light only 200 or so on each output so the Picap might be just the solution... Thanks.

Quick follow up question then.. how does the PiCap get outputs assigned then? Does it have its own web interface separate from the F16v3?

The Pi-cap is setup directly in FPP on the channel outputs page under Pi Pixel Strings. No other configuration is needed.

I believe i read that the connection from expansion board to differential receiver board is rs485 just like DMX. If that's true you should be able to use a wireless dmx transceiver found on ebay just search for "dmx512 pcb modules".

No, you cannot.   It's rs485, but it's the ws2811 protocol, not DMX.   In particular, it's 800khz on four differential pairs as opposed to 250khz on a single pair.

Your best bet for WIFI is either a pixel hat for the Pi or one of the beagle based capes ( and run it in remote mode so no channel data is sent on the wifi.

Ok thanks all!

I'll dig into the PiCaps now I guess..
