F16V3 Diff. Expansion 5v or 12v?

I've looked at the manual for the F16V3 where it discusses the differential expansion board and tried to search here for the answer and am still not certain.

I have an F16V3 powered by a 12v PSU. I want to connect an F16 Differential Expansion v2.0 to the F16V3. The board and the manual indicate that if the diff expansion is powered externally, the power should be 5v. The diff. expansion can also be powered through the ribbon that connects to the F16V3.

Q. Is it safe to connect the differential expansion board to an F16V3 that is powered by a 12v power supply? I'm guessing the answer to that question is "yes."  Otherwise, the board would be of limited usefulness. It's just the need for the external power to be 5v that has me wondering.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The 5vdc that is available over the ribbon cable is sufficient power for the first expansion board's minimal electronics. If you ever decide to add a second expansion board, that board will need 5vdc added via the external power connection.

So, the power that comes in over the ribbon cable needs to be 5v?  I'm only supplying 12v to the F16V3.

There is a built in 12v to 5v unit (buck converter) on the controller.  This is shared with the expansion board. Unfortunately it is not enough to push two expansion boards.

Ok. Thank you both very much for helping me with this. I really appreciate it!
