Hi all,

I just got my first Kulp controller, and am having trouble setting up wifi.  I have multiple falcon controllers, and set up the network connections the same way with just changing the IP address (see screenshots), but I can't get it to connect.  The OLED on the controller says "No Network", and I can't connect over wifi.

I am using "Edimax Wi-Fi 4 802.11n Adapter for PC *New Version* Wireless N150 Nano USB Adapter Dongle,150Mbps, Smallest Wi-Fi 4 Dongle, Win 11 Plug-n-Play, Mac OS, Linux, EW-7811Un V2, Black".  Does it need a driver or something?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Well, I may have figured it out.  So based on another post, I tested the voltage at the usb hub on the controller.  When I have the PB connected to the computer with the microusb for USB tethering, the wifi usb hub has 5v and I can configure the network settings.  When I have the controller powered through a 12v power supply, there is no voltage at the wifi usb hub.   I can't imagine how that could be normal behavior, so I'm guessing I got a bad board.    Can anyone explain what I may be doing wrong before I ask for a replacement?

Have you set the jumper for 12v power?

Yes.  It came preset with the jumper on 12v. I don't know why the USB for the wifi dongle would have power when I'm tethering the PB microusb from the computer and not when I'm powering everything through the board.

I noticed your WPA SSID has a space in its name.
All my SSID never have spaces. It's just better practice.

Agreed on spaces in SSID.  A lot of devices handle a space fine, but quite a few will not.
Using LOR (mostly SuperStar) for all sequencing - using FPP only to drive P5 and P10 panels.

I believe official wifi specs allows spaces in the SSID provided they are not leading or trailing.  In other words, as long as it does not begin or end with a space, it should be supported.  With that said, not all devices comply with the standard, and it could be an issue with some.  Millions and millions of peoples cell phone hotspots are named "User's iPhone" by default and it typically works fine.

Good to know, but that's not the problem here.   As long as the PB is tethered through the microusb to the computer, the wifi usb works and I can connect through the assigned IP just fine.   When powered through just the board the wifi usb doesn't have power and no network connection

powered with microusb tethering and connected to network:  You cannot see attachments on this board.

powered through board and no network:  You cannot see attachments on this board.

From a person that does not own one, and not qualified to give any advice.  It seams like the Kulp board is not getting power to the USB port.  The attached pinout is how this is done normally.  Something could be either shorted out, or not connected between these pins.  With that said, the Kulp board could be taking another path and this information is completely useless.

Unless you don't have the PB plugged into the correct pins, it looks to me like your doing everything right.  Check that none of your pins are shorting.  Make sure you are not setting the back side of the board on a metal screw or something grounding the board out.

I am seeing the same problem with the K40D-PB as well so very interested to see what solutions you might find here.

Assuming this is a K4-PB???  I see no manual on Kulp's website for the K4-PB.  WireWatts links to the F8-PB Manual (which appears to be outdated).  https://kulplights.com/manuals/F8-PB-Manual.pdf.  The manual that wiredwatts referenced does not go into detail how to power the board, nor does it mention wifi power issues in the troubleshooting section.  I certainly see your frustration.

Daniel responds to questions frequently, so hopefully he will comment.  Worse case, there should be a way to connect a USB power source to the 12v power supply and continue to power the Beagle from the USB cable.

Did you have to solder the header pins to the pocket beagle, or did they come pre-soldered?

Everything came pre-soldered.   I actually ordered the PB and board together, so it came all assembled.  I couldn't find a manual to anything either, so I'm not even sure where the power to the wifi usb comes from to test where the short is.   Since I'm using a 12v power source and all my pixels are 12v, I thought about using a buck converter to microusb to keep the USB port powered all the time, but not sure if there is a problem with powering the board with 12v and PB microusb with 5v at the same time while running pixels.

I can't say that I've had any issues with any of my K4s running on 12v.  I do have a new one laying around here somewhere, and I'll try to replicate the problem on it.

The Kulp website advertises...  "[What makes it special?] The PocketBeagle can be powered by the same power supply powering the pixels. There are jumpers on the board to select either 5V or 12V power."  https://kulplights.com/product/k4-pb/  I am not sure it makes sense to get too crazy about reverse engineering it.  Sounds like something is defective.

I did notice that the USB wifi adapter in your picture is not one advertised on the Kulp site.  Did that one come with the board?  If not, you might try using one of the models on their website.
