Since I wasn't able to get an audio board (would love to get one!) I was wondering if I can have the F16 in player mode, then link a pi over Ethernet to play the audio. What would the setup for this look like in FPP/F16 settings?

A little more info would be helpful.  There are a hundred ways to skin the cat, and there are many options.  Are you planning on using with speakers, or transmit on FM radio?  How are you playing the show now?  You could install a Pi indoors and use a FM transmitter, and you can place a Pi in the box next to your F16v4 and use speakers.  What is your ideal solution?

We will be playing the sound through speakers. The setup is actually for a portable show we are setting up for a boat parade. I had planned to run it all from the F16 in player mode when I realized there was no audio output and that's where I am now. What mode would the F16 be in and what mode should the pi running FPP be in to make that setup work? Figure it would be connected via a short Ethernet cable. Thanks for your help with this.

You could install FPP on pi, connect F16v4 to ethernet port on pi, play sequences and audio from FPP.  Common setup for home shows.  Since the Pi is right next to it, I would just run it in player mode.

Is the pi the master or the f16 the master in this scenario? Can the F16 connect to the pi without a network? I've read through the manual and I am not seeing how the pi would   Get an ip. But does it need it since it is directly connected?

This is my first year with my f16. Tan everything on Pi's in the past.

Thanks!

The pi could be the master, but I would just leave in player mode.  Player mode the Pi will store the sequences, audio, playlists, and schedule.  Basically used the same as xschedule.  There is a more advanced mode that allows the F16V4 to hold the files, but there are limits and probably a more complicated setup than you need.

You can plug your laptop directly into the F16v4, so should able to plug in the FPP directly as well.  I believe so, but have not tried.

Both would require an IP.  I think the new version of FPP supports DHCP, but think you would want to assign manual static addresses on both devices.
