While working with some pigtails and some Ray bought extensions, I found the hard ware my pigtail was bad.  Since it's a critical part of the element to have a pigtail, I would like to make up something simple that would:

indicate with LEDS that it's good
indicated with leds that it's shorted
indicated with leds that it's dis-connected (e.g. wire does not go through)

I've got a general idea that I could use 5v source a couple of leds and the appropriate resisters for the first one and the last one, but don't know how to protect things from a shorted one, or maybe it won't matter?

are you talking about cat5/rj45 pigtails?  i've used standard cable testers for this purpose.

for waterproof, I've created a battery/led circuit with aligator clips...  (single battery, but separate colored led for each wire)

I think the is talking about the 3 conductor cables with waterproof connectors.  I bought 10 of the ten footers from Ray and 5 of them were bad.  I used an ohm meter and when I flexed the ends they would open up!

Someone on DLA at one time was selling them - It can plug into a hub, and with the 4 leds tell you all sorts of info - I have not had to use it in a while so I will do dig it up and post back

That was me too...  just got back from a world-wide tour hawking this item.  The engineers in Estonia can't get enough of them!   :P

I will say that I've used it many times... to replace fuses, to confirm that the falcon was passing a signal to the output pixelnet port (it wasn't!) and to test my wireless-transmitted DMX.

I'll put something together when I get a chance... at the moment i'm trying to get some work projects done so that I can focus on getting my lights up this weekend.
