FPP 6 to Renard Controller

I'm loaning my renard controller (which I have only ever connected to via an F16/F48) to a buddy who wants to get into this crazy hobby. He wants to connect the renard directly to a raspberry pi running FPP.  Is there a specific USB dongle needed?  I've seen this mentioned in some very old posts so not sure if that is still the case. Can he connect directly to the pi Ethernet jack?

I believe the best way to do that is with a USB to Ethernet adapter and use one of the Pi's USB ports. In FPP set up Renard in outputs using the selected USB port.

The Renard controllers are not Ethernet devices.  You will need to get a USB to serial adapter and connect the Renard to the Pi.  Connecting the Renard to an Ethernet port will cause damage to the devices.

Thanks for the responses. I'll look at getting a USB adapter.

That is true, and I have in the past always used USB to Serial adapter. Until I switched to PB16 controller and just plug into the port on the board.
This October my friend Dave used a Pi4 & FPP to output to a Tr24 to run 3 singing faces using a USB to Ethernet adapter and a standard cable. That's the only reason I said ethernet instead on serial, I've seen it work but have not done it myself.

Ordered this guy.  Fingers crossed.

I run my ss24 Renard controllers from a Falcon PiCap.  If you put the included jumpers in the Renard position a standard cat 5 cable connects straight to the controller. Plus you get 2 Pixel outputs and a real time clock.  It also allows me to power the PI from a 12v supply due to it's DC regulator.

Just as a follow up, the USB dongle I purchased worked great. I connected to my renard controller using a Cat 5 crossover cable. Below is my FPP and Xlights setup.
