can't stay logged in to FPP 1.5

FPP was worked excellently for me over the last week and a bit running my show. Yesterday I attempted to update some sequences as I'd made some changes and I couldn't log in at all. Upon further experimentation I can log in in the few seconds after boot up when it announces the IP but after then I can't do anything. I am fairly loathe to do an upgrade as the show is currently working well and if it's not broken don't fix it is my motto.
It may be coincidence but I have now noticed that there is a big green banner saying 1.6 is available which I can't say I noticed before. My version is Version: v1.5-56-g99cb1c1  Host: FPP and it's on 10.0.0.140. I can ping the PI at any time on 10.0.0.140 and it pumps out data to my show fine. To stop the PI pumping out gazillions of bytes while I am trying to access it I have edited the schedule on the SD card so it doesn't start until 1-1-2016. This has stopped the show running but hasn't allowed me to access FPP to make changes.
Help me Obi Wan you're my only hope.

As a temporary fix I will do my display testing from PC and update direct to the SD card but I need my direct FPP access back and I'm hoping I don't have to do a forced update to 1.6.

CaptainMurdoch

I would check the network cable and switch to see if it is running in half duplex or 10mbit speed.

The v1.6 upgrade is optional and I recommend the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach for people during the holiday season.

I've rebooted the 2 computers that connect to the PI, the PI 5 times while connected to router, about 10 times while directly connected to laptop. At all times I can ping FPP but can log in for maybe 1s or so before I get a timeout when trying to do it again. I've tried it with FF and IE.

CaptainMurdoch

The last few times something like this has happened to someone over the past few weeks, it was because they created a repeating playlist with only an event in it, so FPP happily kept looping, firing off the event in the background over and over until it consumed all the memory and CPU on the system.  Have you created any new scheduled playlists lately?  When it is playing, is it playing audio?  Maybe audio is misconfigured and it is looping the repeating playlist but skipping each entry because it can't play audio.

I haven't changed the playlist for about 4 days and the problem only occurred yesterday.
Everything plays fine but I can't access the web interface beyond about a second or 2 after the IP is announced.
Changing the schedule for a 2016 start stops everything from playing but I still get locked out within seconds.
Has there been some sort of code "push" for that green version 1.6 notification?

CaptainMurdoch

The v1.6 notification was pushed about a month and a half ago with only a few minor bugfixes since then and nothing that should cause what you are describing.

Can you ssh into the system and run 'top' to see what is running that seems to be locking you out?  does the system lag at all when this happens, or do the audio and sequence play at normal speed?

If you want to revert to an older version, you can go to https://github.com/FalconChristmas/fpp/commits/v1.5 and pick a SHA1 hash (the 7-digit hexadecimal number in the box on the right) and try reverting to one of those versions by running the following:

cd /opt/fpp
sudo git checkout THESHAVERSIONNUMBER

I would also try shutting down and putting in a different empty USB stick and seeing if that allows the system to stay up and running.  If so, then it sounds like the issue is related to the configuration on the USB stick or the USB stick itself.

Here are the changes since the v1.6 upgrade button was added:

AAH

Thanks for your time Chris. I ended up ssh'ing into the PI via trial and error and below is the screenshot of what showed. There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary from what I could see. I then thought I'll try swapping usb drives and for the sake of getting going quicker I thought I'd copy all the files across and then remove the playlist type files. In the process of copying stuff across I discovered that the startup.log file was corrupt and that appears to be enough to kick me to the curb. I'm now up and running again and the 1st thing I did was turn off all logging :)
I'm guessing that the file may have been corrupted through a partial power cycle on startup and because it has become corrupt the fpp code bangs it's head in the background against it trying to get some sense into it.

CaptainMurdoch

There isn't anything being written to the startup log once fppd starts.  If it was related I would expect it was the kernel trying to flush the cache to the USB stick and corrupt file.

Glad you for it working.
