Total newbie to diy pixels here. But I'm using alphapix 4 and some sample strings learning this stuff. When in unicast mode xlights outputs to lights perfectly. But when I change it to multicast I get no output to lights? Any suggestions? Here are the pictures of the setups

You need to look at your alphapix 4 and see how it is configured.  Make sure that it is also configured for multicast input.  Both the output device and the input device need to match or no lights.

i didn't see any options on the alphapix setup page for multicast

How did you define it to work in unicast mode?  If you are just pointing your unicast packets to the alphapix IP address, then it is more than likely that it does not support multicast.

I have seen several posts about this. I did read that they don't support multicast. You may try to flash the board with the latest firmware, or contact HolidayCoro.

yah all I did was change the xlights config to multicast vs unicast. I emailed holiday coro to find out

Looks like they still don't support multicast.

yah no way was I gonna use it for main controller. I just wanted to get s bunch of different style pixels and stuff to play around with so I bought that. I plan to run my falcolns in multicast I hear it's better. So I now have a expensive pixel tester Lolol. Oh well. I guess it's not smart to run unicast and multicast

I run all of my controllers in unicast. Haven't had any issues. I have a mix of Falcon and PixLite.

UNBELIEVABLE .....................................

Sell it off quickly to a unicast person :)

Multicast really isn't any better, it's just a bit easier to configure.  The downside to multicast is that it tends to flood the network with show data because most unmanaged switches just act like hubs with multicast packets and sends it out of all ports.  Unless you intend to make a separate show network, I would look for controllers that support both options.

tripplett

I've never understood multicast.  I know it works for many but for me I like to say "you go here".  For me unicast makes sense.  Maybe it's a control thing ha.

gadgetsmith

It's pretty much recommended to create a separate show network regardless of using unicast or multicast.  Haven't read of anyone flooding a show network with unicast or multicast that will create problems with the show itself.  The only issues I've read about are people running their show on a home network and they can't stream Hulu or something related to their normal internet/intranet usage.
