I have been luckyin the past I guess. Is it the general rule that if pixels fail mid string to end that the last pixel lit is bad or can it be assumed that the first dark pixel is failed?  2811/12m bullet style.  Thanks in advance.

In my experience, the following seems to hold true:

If a pixel is missing a color it is usually that pixel.

If a string goes dark from a specific position, change out the last lit pixel as well as the first dark pixel.  The last lit pixel may not be passing on the datastream, or the first dark pixel is not receiving.  In the cold and dark it is better to replace the two, then find which one is still good back in the (heated) workshop.  The good one becomes a candidate for single replacement (see above for missing a color) or for use as a null pixel.

Ok, will change out two.  Thank you

A trick that I use is having a spare SSC or on my bench a spare Zeus.  I cut the string at the first out pixel and connect the cut string to the spare controller and see if it works.  If so, then it is a pretty good bet that the last one lit was the issue and if not, then I start removing nodes from the cut portion of the string until it begins to work.  In most cases, its the one node but I had a few where two were shot.

Can you bring me up to date?  "SSC" or "Zeus"?  I am unfamiliar with either of these.

Those are pixelnet controllers from DLA in the Lynx line.  The uSC from Corey is an upgrade from all of those.  SSC require a hub, either DLA or Falcon.

As does the uSC but yes, these are DLA devices.  The point was that you can cut the string at the last pixel lit and connect the cut portion to a pixel controller to determine which pixel failed.  If the cut end of the string works properly, the issue is most likely the last lit pixel in the string and if not, the issue is in the cut portion of the string and most likely the first pixel.  Pixels are a lot cheaper now but when I started they were a buck a pop so it was cost effective to find and toss only the actual problem node(s).

I do the same thing.  I have a wire with alligator clips on it so all I have to do is strip the ends of the next pixel, connect and test.
