Hi All,

I am a total newbie here.  I am planning to setup a light show on my christmas tree. Currently I have a raspberry pi 2 B and ws2812b 150 LED. I have read a lot of tutorials about this and found out that Raspberry Pi can directly drive WS2812B LEDs through rpi_ws281x library (Reference: https://learn.adafruit.com/neopixels-on-raspberry-pi/overview). I am not sure if this is enough for a light show that will also play music. This tutorial just only shows how to drive the LED through raspberry pi and does not integrate with any music files.

Now I do not know if I need to buy more controller or start the setup using my existing hardware. I am planning to create a sequence on Vixen 3 and upload it on FPP. What I am not sure is what controller should I select on Vixen 3. Is it GenericSerial? If so, what are the settings or configurations should I make?  My next  question is what is the right Output channel setup on FPP is it RPIWS281X or GPIO?

If my setup is not possible, what equipment can I still use? Can I use an Arduino R3 as a seperate controller? How will I connect this to raspberry Pi?

I am very confuse on the many tutorials that appear only that is why I ask here. Any reply will be very much appreaciated. Thank you.  :)

You want the RPIWS281X channel output in FPP, the wiring pinout is in the Channel Output help page.  I don't think the controller type matters much in vixen as long as it is patched and ends up in the exported .fseq file.  If you search for RPIWS281X here, you will find lots of threads since lots of users are using this with the new PiCap that David created.

Thank you for the fast reply.

Ok I will read more about RPIWS281x channel output setup. Anyway, I will try to use a random controller on Vixen and patch my elements from there. I am worried if the sequence will not as i want it to be because of my selection on the controller.

CaptainMurdoch

The actual controller types don't really matter as long as the patching is correct.  The FSEQ file only contains raw channel data, and i believe Vixen3 shows you the ordering of your defined controllers channels in the FSEQ file.  You should be able to correlate that info with the Channel Output config in FPP to make sure you have the correct start channels set in FPP.
