In an effort to make bigger shows, has anyone successfully used hostapd on the raspberrypi with FPP to create a "wifi extender" or repeater??

https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/89803/access-point-as-wifi-router-repeater-optional-with-bridge/89804#89804

It seems like this could be built in to the system to help create a wider mesh wifi network for the pi's to use.

If I am understanding correctly, what you are asking for is already implemented in FPP. FPP does have a Wi-Fi Tethering option/Capabilities.

I don't think so. If I understand the way FPP has implemented the tethering it disables access to another network.
There is a method that can be used to setup both a wireless AP/repeater and a client (so it can access your network/internet) on the same wlan interface.

The current tether option would want there to be a wired eth correct?

That is not correct. There are a ton of people that use the Wi-Fi tethering on things like a parade float and access the Wi-Fi SSID and FPP will communicate to the controllers via the ethernet interface.

I don't think there is a repeater option though.

Yes, or another wlan0 adapter

FPP would not do this out of the box.  A Wifi extender/repeater would require two network interfaces and preferably two different radio frequencies.  You could possibly add another USB WLAN adapter and use bridging, but you would probably need to use multi-sync to drive the lights... as the lag over two wifi connections would be a lot to overcome.

You can create a very big show using just FPP remotes.  What is your goal in terms of "bigger" shows, ie., more props, more lights, more acreage.  In this case we would need more information from you.
