Well,  so far the all in one dongle did not work...am testing the second one now.   I even reformatted my SD card and put 0.4.0 on it.  Well will see.

Please upload the log zip from the log viewer page in the FPP file manager if this doesn't work.  Did the ttyUSB port at least show up in the dropdown with the first new dongle you tried.  Are you booting up with the dongle in then configuring then restarting FPPD to apply the new config then testing?

ok....its not the dongle.    I have now tried 4 dongles and I get nothing in the output section other than the chance to select spi-ws2801.   I am lost now???

Here is the zip file.   Does anyone go to chat much...thought maybe if i could talk to someone in chat or via phone might get this lined out....I know its probably human error just dont know what.

OK....So I am testing every way possible.   So I take away the Powered USB hub and hardwire into my router.  I plug the all in one Dongle I just got into the the PI USB port and my sequence flashdrive in the other.  I notice the new 485 dongle has lights on it and they start flashing.  I go into the output and low and behold I am able to find Renard.  I select up my channel count and for the first time I hav a USBTTY1 instead of always USBTTY0 so I select it and click save.  Go to my status page click on a test sequence and BAM...it starts to flash some lights.....Then about halfway through the sequence....BAM it stops and the FPPD stops running.   I try to reboot and nothing.   Cant get the dongle to flash any lights like it is recieving anymore but when you go into outputs it still shows something plugged in but it wont let you select it.

And thats where Im at now!!!!!!

OK,  Matt and Capt....I think I "SSHed" did the plug and unplug thing.  Then zipped up the logs.  Here ya go, maybe you can make sense of it.  Thanks Guys!

From the log, it looks like your external hub was still plugged in.

Immediately after that is detected in the logs, the following errors start occurring:

Oct  4 23:14:55 FPP kernel: [    2.975046] usb 1-1.3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Oct  4 23:14:55 FPP kernel: [    3.175021] usb 1-1.3.2: device descriptor read/64, error -71

Have you tried using just the built-in USB ports without the external hub plugged in?  I saw you mention that you bypassed it, but I wasn't sure if that meant you left it plugged in or unplugged the hub from the Pi.

Yes  I tried it without the wireless dongle and no powered hub.  Since there are only 2 USB ports I took the wireless dongle off and hooked in the ethernet cable.  I then put in my flashdrive for my sequences and the all in one dongle that I showed you above.

The rest is what I described above about it working for a moment then that was it just quit.   Tried it a couple more times and nothing.  Going to try it one more time today and see what I get just like yesterday.  If cant get it this time, I have an E131 bridge that I bought last year to use for the possibility of some pixels and never got to use it so I will build it and try using it.  Not sure at this point.

I appreciate all the time Capt that you and Matt are taking among others to help!!!

Also this may be off the subject but why when I am using a wireless dongle I only get 2 lights working on my PI and mostly its the the first red one on and the green flashes on occasion but when I am plugged into a hardline All the lights flash....Do I have an issue or is this normal.

The extra leds are for eth connection and activity.  They will be dark unless cable plugged in

For the SSH I wanted to see the output of "sudo lsusb -vv", but I think just seeing the multiple plugs and same error, it seems there's an issue either with your dongle, or hub.

Can you re-do the dongle directly into the Pi like Chris suggested, but collect logs.  I want to see if the error message given is the same for that scenario as well.

When you're saying neither work, you mean the original dongles you have, right?  Not the new FTDI based one Chris suggested you get, right?  Those should definitely work.

CaptainMurdoch

I didn't see FTDI in the last log at all, so I agree with Matt that it would be good to see logs with only the flash drive and FTDI dongle plugged in.

when you say logs do you mean plug and unplug the USB dongle

Matt,
I did both of the things you were talking about in the SSH thing.   I might have done one of them wrong.   I have tried the dongle directly in the PI.  That is what I was describing a few threads back where it started working for about 20 seconds then quit.   I have tried everything I have it hooked up right now directly with the FTDI dongle(this one)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BR0AY80/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and I can select Renard now BUT I get USBTTY0 not USBTTY1.

Also I was trying to do logs by plugging and unplugging the FTDI dongle which is plugged in directly to the PI but when I do that it reboots the PI automatically but when I done it plugged into the powered USB port it didnt reboot.

I am plugging and unplugging right now and will pull the logs in a bit to put on here.   If there is something else I need to do let me know.   I can do that SSH thing again if I need to do it a certain away.  Thanks.

By the way just to make sure I have that dongle wired correctly I have the blue/white in the + terminal and the solid blue in the - terminal.  The center terminal is not marked so I assumed it is grounds which is the 2 oranges.  I have searched everywhere for a diagram to see if it is but cant find one.

OK....Matt, Capt,

I know you are tired of this thread as so am I but I greatly appreciate all you help you all have put in.

With that said I dont know what happened but while trying to plug and unplug somehow it started working.  See each time I plugged and unplugged I was going in to the output section trying to put in outputs then trying to play a sequence to see what happens.  The setup it is working is with the powered USB hub gone(using USBs on the board) and the new dongle plugged directly in.   Dont know what did it but it is going.   I have even changed to the other dongle I bought and it is working now.   Dont know if it is a wireless thing or the powered USB but guess I will leave them off.   The onlly reason I have the powered USB was because I had the wireless dongle, flash drive, and the 485 dongle all to plug in and only had 2 USB ports....Oh well dont know what thats about BUT it is going.

Once again you guys outdid yourself.

CaptainMurdoch

I think your powered USB hub was part of the issue.  In the log I looked at, there were errors that started appearing in the log after the kernel scanned the bus and detected the external hub.

The Pi can sometimes lockup or reboot if you plug in USB devices, this is related to power, sometimes a power supply with more current will help this, sometimes not.

You should always reboot with the dongle inserted, then configure the channel output to the correct port (it should be ttyUSB0 if there is only one dongle plugged in).  The ttyUSB number will change sometimes if you unplug and replug or switch dongles while the system is booted.  It is always best to boot with the one that you want to use and then configure it because you know it will always boot that way.  If you have two dongles, you want to boot them them in their final 'home' ports and then configure because if you insert one or both while already booted, you can't guarantee that that is the order that they will come up in if you reboot.

Glad it seems to be working good for you now, and if it acts up again, we're here to help. :)  If anything, I would try a different hub if you find that you do need to use one.  Once you know it's working on the onboard USB ports, then it should continue to work on a hub if you boot up with everything plugged in.

Now that I know ,and trust me my wife says she know since I have cycled it about 10 times now and goes everytime  ;D,  I may order me another powered USB port and try it.  Do you have a suggestion for another 4 port and if I only need 1 more port do you think I would need the powered port?  I really would like to try my wireless again.   I only want it so that I can do anything I want to the Pi while it is out in the show.   If not no biggie.  Thanks again Capt.
