Question about /home/fpp/media/config/interface.wlan0

I have a Falcon Player system that needs to bounce between a couple of different locations.  I was going to accomplish this by creating two different configurations and copying them to the /home/fpp/media/config/interface.wlan0 file but then I noticed this in the interface.wlan0 file:

INTERFACE=wlan0
PROTO=dhcp
SSID="xxxxxxxxxxxx"
PSK="yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy"
HIDDEN=
WPA3=
BACKUPSSID=""
BACKUPPSK=""
BACKUPHIDDEN=
BACKUPWPA3=

So will the BACKUP... fields allow me to put in a secondary location that will automatically be used when the upper system is not available?

It is NOT recommended to edit this file manually, there are a lot of other settings that could be affected. There is a place in the GUI to enter the backup SSID. you have to set the UI mode to advanced.

Thanks.  There seems to be a tiny bug in the code.  Instead of updating the settings on  the screen when I make changes, it hangs.  Refreshing the screen takes care of it, and the settings are updated.

Meanwhile, while very helpful, it doesn't quite fully answer my question. When I select the advanced mode, it creates a new button  <Add New Interface>  When I create a new interface in the UI, it creates another interface file, and there does not seem to be any way in the UI to remove it.  It does not update the existing interface file, but it does allow the user to update the BACKUP fields.  The question is, which one will do what I need?  The second interface file SHOULD work, one would think, as it is the standard method for creating multiple targets for mobile purposes, but since this is tied to the UI and not the actual Raspbian system, this might possibly not be the case.

So the question remains, will filling out the BACKUP fields do what I expect, or should I rely on the secondary interface file?

No, I didn't mention the Add New Interface option. This is used to add a network interface that there currently isn't the physical hardware installed for yet. For example, you are using a BeagleBone based controller that doesn't have a Wi-Fi adapter installed at the moment. You can Add the interface information and then when you install the Wi-Fi adapter it will be configured and ready to run without having to go back and configure it once it is installed.
That won't do what you want and is covered in the FPP Manual

That is not exactly correct, an interface is a physical hardware component. Mobile devices do not have multiple Wi-Fi adapters. The have multiple Access Point configurations.

Yes, per the manual

Thanks!  That answers it.  By the way, where is the manual to be found?  It's been a while, so I don't recall.

Clearly, this feature is designed to do pretty much what I need, so I'm not complaining, however, it occurs to me some folks might like a mobile configuration that allows many wireless networks to be defined.  This might be useful. for example, for wearable pixels.

In any case, thanks, again!

Usually people using mobile type displays use the tethering option. I am not sure how complicated you want the Interface to be?

Thanks!

It's just a thought.  It really doesn't apply to me, at least at this point, so I don't have an answer.  I will say the tethering option is a massive pain in the tuchas.  I always have problems trying to use my phone and reconfiguring a laptop is a pain, too.

How so?

I have a feeling you are missing or misunderstanding something? I have used the Tethering several dozens of times and shown dozens of others how to use it and they didn't have any problems.

There is really no configuration needed. What are you configuring?
