I have a colleague at work who brought a K4-PB and is asking for help setting it up.  I have used FPP with RPi's for years, but I never used a PB, Kulp board or USB tethering.  He said that it came with a warning about "don't connect the micro USB port for tethering to the PB while it is connected to the cape" (his words).  He stated that he already blew one cape doing this.

The problem is that tethering with only the PB and not the cape (actual Kulp board) doesn't give him any network options (wlan0 or eth0).  How is he supposed to configure the network without the cape (which has the WiFi dongle plugged into it)?

I use an usb hub with ethernet adaptor to set up my K8-PBs.  Should be the same process on the K4.

I use a USB to Micro USB cable, connecting my PC to the pocketbeagle.  I use 192.168.7.2 to connect to PB and set my wlan0 network SSID and password

But if you can't setup the network without tethering because the PB has neither eth0 or wlan0 defined, how do you do it?

You cannot do that with the K4's and K40's from this year as it will burn out the USB power controller.  :(

In general, the best options are a USB hub with USB ethernet adapter so you can get in via DHCP or, the other really good method, is WIFI tethering.   WIFI tethering requires a WIFI adapter that supports access point mode though.

I use something similar to this. Plug my wifi dongle into it and a network cable from my route. Use whatever IP is assigned to set my wifi network up and the reboot and remove the adapter and install the wifi dongle into the board.

Put on the display let it boot and it will tell you the default ip address. Enter that in your computer and go from there
