I'm afraid I'm so far behind that I can't upgrade to the current version from a backup.  What is the best way to handle this?   What should I look out for? Thanks in advance!

The best and quickest way would be to do a fresh install. There are step by step instructions in the FPP Manual https://falconchristmas.github.io/FPP_Manual.pdf#page=9

And if you have the latest xLights software, configuring your FPP device is super easy!

I agree with what Poporacer said.  Most FPP configurations are not too difficult to re-create.  However, here are a couple things I would do just to be a little more safe...

1.  Save the original SD-card and USB stick.  Put them aside and label them as your FPP 1.x backup.  Worst case is you can go back and boot off them to get back to your previous configuration.

2.  Save "screen shots" of your FPP 1.x configuration pages (schedule, playlists, input/output).  Theses will be handy when you configure the new install.

3.  Use a new, quality brand-name, Class-10 uSD card (SanDisk Ultra or Samsung Evo are recommended) to build the new FPP 4.x image.  16GB or 32GB is recommended.  You no longer need a USB flash drive for v4.x  All your sequences and media will be stored on the uSD card, not the USB stick.

Thanks guys. I'm almost there! My sequences all run and the lights to all three controllers all work however, none of my MP4 videos will play. I've got HDMI set as default and I've checked the force HDMI box but nothing. The MP4 files have the same name as the fseq files (nothing has changed there).

The MP4 needs to have the same name as the audio file.

Yep, all MP4's have the same name but that wasn't it.  I had forgotten that you can't just play the .fseq file right out of the Status page because you can't specify the media file there.  Once I put the sequence in a playlist and specified the MP4 all worked great. The sequences were originally made with an mp3 file but then we changed them all use video.  I'm sure there is a way to change the sequence to point to the MP4 file permanently but I've not had a chance to look into that yet.

This might be what you meant to say, but just to be clear..... you CAN just play the .fseq file right out of the status page BUT you can't specify the media file right there.   Media files are specified in the playlist (as you found out).
