Limitations on Video file size?

My project is simple enough - unrelated to lighting and/or Christmas :)
I am setting up several video screens to run synchronized video (for an Art exhibition). My setup works flawlessly in principle, but I have a problem with the video file sizes.

I could not find a specification for the largest video file size allowed. I do know that over 2GB doesn't work, and below 1GB does.
I know I can split my video into sections, but I prefer not to do it - as this creates a small black disruption between the sections

What is the real limitation on video file size, and how to overcome it?
Thanks,
Jay

You posted your question in "The Lab" section and did not mention the product your asking about.

The Pi3 and Pi4 have a video resolution limit of 1080p (1920x1080) at H.264.  The Pi4 additionally supports H.265 at 4K resolution (3840x2160).  A single controller would not support that many lights at full resolution even if the Pi could.  Since whatever your doing works at 1gb and not 2gb, could this be a resolution difference instead of file size problem?

You may find that the limit is on the upload side into ftp, try uploading using winscp or scp or similar rather than fpp connect or the fpp web interface and see if larger files work ok.

Jayl

Thanks for the responses!
I already tried to transfer a 2.35GB video via scp to the media/videos directory with no issue, however when I open the file manager in FPP, it indicates the length of the video as "unknown", and it's impossible to add it to a playlist.

This is apparently an FPP issue, which I don't understand, and would hope it would be fixed..

what version of fpp?  There was a fix to that unknown file size thing in the master branch from memory, but this should all be unrelated to whether you can add it to a playlist or not, that part doesn't make sense to me. Maybe share some screenshots of that aspect?

Jayl

It took me a while to get to this.. Attached are 3 screenshots -
1. The terminal window into the media/videos folder, showing the large file (Evening)
2. The video in FPP, with an "Unknown" size
3. The error when trying to add it to a playlist

Jayl

forgot to add - I am using the latest FPP 6.3

darylc

Yeah try changing to master and see if it works

Jayl

Hi - thanks.
There are only two options (I know of): Player & Remote, where the Player is the de-facto master, syncing the other RP's.

The test I did was on the Player.

Master as in the version, eg it has a lot of bugs fixed that were in 6.3

FPP Settings->UI->Developer then  FPP Settings->Developer->Git Branch (change from 6.3 to master)

Thanks again! I tried a 2.5GB file, and it was uploaded with no problem.
(I am continuing to test with larger files, and will update with my findings)

I have successfully uploaded a 4h video, 5.4GB - with no problem.
Thanks for the support,
Jay
