I am not Chris but I think the dongle he means is something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-to-RS485-USB-485-Converter-Adapter-Support-Win7-XP-Vista-Linux-Mac-OS-WinCE5-/270979989715

I think that one uses the CP1?? chipset and doesn't support the higher speeds necessary for DMX and Pixelnet with the current Linux driver.  I would use a FTDI chip dongle like Jim linked to.  I have about 4-5 of these that kind that I use for testing on my desk.  I ran one last year in my display to get DMX off a Pi out in the yard because I didn't want to run another cable from the FPD in the garage.

DLA 4-port passive hub

That is not what you want.  I'm talking about ones of these:

You provide 5V power to that board, run a cable from the USB RS485 dongle to the input and then you can connect 4 uSC's on the 4 outputs.

I defer to you guys and deleted the link I posted.  Thanks for the link Jim.  This thing pretty much PNP and stable?  I never really trusted my DLA dongle.  It was wonky but it was the very first light board I ever built so that could be related to it.

Oh, you have opened up another door for me.  I only use these for Pixelnet out.  What has to be changed to make them DMX out?  I am all pixels except for a couple of static items and this could help me in where I physically place those items.  Then I could sell off my Active Hub and make a down payment on another F16v2 or 3.  LOL
