Title: FPP 6.0 Released!
Post by: dkulp on July 26, 2022, 05:53:40 PM
The entire FPP team is proud to announce that FPP 6.0 is now released!    This represents more than 7 months of development effort to bring the underlying OS image up to the latest Debian release, add a bunch of new features, fix a bunch of bugs, and start preparing for the show season.

Enhancements

Major Changes/Incompatibilities

Other updates/changes

Upgrade Instructions
It is strongly recommended to do a full "OS Level" upgrade or re-image instead of attempting to upgrade directly from any older FPP version. There are several new features that will not work if an OS level upgrade is not done. There are two ways to do so:
Selecting an image
For Raspberry Pi series including Pi B, Pi B+, Pi 3, Pi 3+, Pi 4 and Pi Zero use this image
https://github.com/FalconChristmas/fpp/releases/download/6.0/FPP-v6.0-Pi.img.zip

For Beaglebone Black, Beaglebone Green, PocketBeagle, and Beaglebone Green Gateway use this image
https://github.com/FalconChristmas/fpp/releases/download/6.0/FPP-v6.0-BBB.img.zip

Additional new features not part of the Pi/BBB Images

What about upgrading from beta images that are already installed?

----------------------------
Based on K6ccc's comments I downloaded the FPPOS file for 6.0 and used that and it seems to have worked fine.
1 down 13 more to go.

Found the fppos under: https://github.com/FalconChristmas/fpp/releases/

Upgraded from Master branch 457 (I think it was) using the fppos upgrade method on both my 3W x 2H P5 matrix and my 4W x 3H P10 matrix (both using PocketBeagles).  Took less time than I expected.
Looks like it is working in Bridge mode (yea, I  know, not really called that anymore) from LOR.

I like the new test pattern on the matrix panels.

In all the years I spent in IT, we always declared, "never trust a .0 release."  Now, with that said, I'm looking at installing it because of the quality people involved in getting this "out the door".

A big THANK YOU to the whole crew for what appears to be a good product.

Now it is off to the workbench to see if I'm going to have to eat my words, or not!

:o ;D :)  ::)

BTW - Hopefully my list of FPP loads all are in the "no-license-needed camp."  Just saying ...

FYI and v6 will not allow a connection either by tethering or usb for setup for my ancient RPI0 non-wifi version w/ usb wifi adapter.  Should this be expected?  I was prev running v5.4.

Not sure if this is the right place to post so please advise if I need to post somewhere else!
I did a fresh install of 6.0 onto a Pi4
I have a sound blaster USB device connected.
When I go to select my audio device, the drop down is narrow and will not allow me to select or see any options.
Almost like it is not pre-filling with the options.
I tried Basic, Advanced, Developer,  Experimental UIs to no affect.
I tried resetting the sound blaster into another USB port.
Any advice?

Works with my Pi4 and Sound blaster 3
Here is a screenshot of it in the config and one of my About screen.
Is your version 6 completely upgraded?

I did a fresh install on a formatted 32gb SD card
Shows FPP Version 6.0
Platform Raspberry Pi(Pi 4)
FPP OS Build v2022-07
OS Version Raspian GNU/Linux 11 (bullseye)

I have tried Edge, Chrome and IE (windows 10)
I also installed this image on a second SD card and configured on a second Pi but this one is a Pi3B+ - Same results

That screen would make me think either the soundblaster was not plugged in at boot up, the USB port is bad or the soundblaster has failed.
Title: Re: FPP 6.0 Released!
Post by: rmorgan62 on July 31, 2022, 08:25:26 AM
Thank you Jim!
I would agree except I would think the drop down should show the default audio device selection regardless of if the soundblaster is good or bad?
But to make sure I explored this as a possibility, I had a brand-new USB Sound Blaster that I tried, same result.
I tried all of the USB ports, same result.
I tried without a sound blaster at all, same results (I would have thought the default device would show up)
I should mention that I shutdown and rebooted for each test.

Post by: Sawdust on July 31, 2022, 10:17:47 AM
I lean with Jim....the Sound Blaster seems to be driving a conflict.  Have you tried a clean new image without any accessories attached?  This should give you the PI 4 audio as default.  I reimaged a Pi2, 3 & 4 last night.  All showed the drop down for Pi BMC Device as expected.

Note: do not boot with any accessories (except ethernet rj45) until you view settings

Do you have an FM Transmitter nearby? Many are known to cause interference. If so, unplug the Transmitter from power, unplug the SoundBlaster then reboot the Pi. Post a Screenshot of your Audio Page again and also the results of the Help>Troubleshooting commands Sound Card section.

Follow up post: Yes, I have an FM transmitter near the player and remotes.  I moved it, turned it off and unplugged it.  No change.
I did a fresh, re-image using 6.0 and did not plug up anything except the power.  No Change (The default sound device does not show)
I upgraded that to 6.1 - No change
I pulled my 6.1 cards out and put them on a shelf.
I took 3 new cards and installed 5.5.  I hooked up the sound blaster, turned on the transmitter and put it back in its original location.
All sound options show up just fine on 5.5-24
I am going to set the show up to run on 5.5-24 and then once it is ready, I am going back to continue troubleshooting 6.1.
I feel like there is some issue with the 6.0 image I downloaded so I am going to download a later image once they are released and see if the issue is fixed.

From the "new features" list:

Other updates/changes
Crash Reporting - HOPEFULLY you won't experience this. However, if FPP crashes, it should produce a crash report on a new "Crash Reports" tab in the file manager. If you see these, please let us know.

I do have a crash report but it isn't clear "where" to send it. It clearly shows a Download button but should it have a "Send" button? I did the "Drag and Drop" as shown but it isn't clear what happened when I did that. (i.e., Did it go to the right place?)

I have a 3B+ that has generated two Crash Reports now. It was updated using PPOS, not a full wipe/install.

Quote from: JonB256 on August 01, 2022, 06:16:15 AMI do have a crash report but it isn't clear "where" to send it.
When you first installed FPP, you had an initial setup page and there was an option to automatically send the reports and what portion of the reports you wanted to send.

Quote from: JonB256 on August 01, 2022, 06:16:15 AMIt clearly shows a Download button but should it have a "Send" button?
The Download Button will download the Crash log to your local computer. There is no "Send" button because if you didn't elect to send automatically, then you will need to post your problem in a forum or in a GitHub issue with the Log. If there were a "Send" button, I am sure there would be some people that would send the log repeatedly and only create more work for the developers.

Quote from: JonB256 on August 01, 2022, 06:16:15 AMI did the "Drag and Drop" as shown but it isn't clear what happened when I did that.
The "Drag and Drop" is on every tab of the File Manager and is used as a portal to upload files from your local computer to your FPP Device so it probably did nothing.

Quote from: JonB256 on August 01, 2022, 06:16:15 AMDid it go to the right place?
Only if you wanted it to stay on your FPP.

Can you attach the logs to your reply along with an explanation of what you were doing when the crash happened?
Thanks

When you first installed FPP, you had an initial setup page and there was an option to automatically send the reports and what portion of the reports you wanted to send.

This FPP is set to share crash reports, so having a large red bar telling me it has created a Crash Report and "click here" to Send It makes me think it didn't actually send it.

As far as what it was doing to provide with the crash report? It occurred overnight and was doing nothing. No schedules, no playlist.

I didn't know that it would give you a Message banner, So maybe it doesn't automatically send the report???

This is from a RasPi 3B+ v6.0.1. I use it as my show master with a SB3 connected to an EDM FM transmitter. It literally does nothing except sent Sync packets and audio. No outputs.fpp-Pi-6.0.1-2022-07-31_20-00-05.zip

Did you set the FPPD Start delay under system on the Status/Control menu? If I remember correctly, I had the same problem last year. A 30 sec delay fixed the problem.

Had another crash report. Since it had the same exact time (8:00 pm) as the last one, I checked my Schedule.
In my scheduler, had an event (Brightness) set for 8:01pm.  I have deleted it and will see if it recurs.
The Brightness plugin was/is up to date.
This schedule event has been running for over a month (under Master Branch updates) but didn't start causing errors until I did the PPOS update to 6.0 and 6.0.1

Here is the report:

Can you try updating to 6.0.2 now?  The crash log is "strange" and not entirely useful, but a couple things have been fixed in a related area from other crash logs so it might be working now.

That said, can I ask why you put the brightness commands in playlists and scheduled the playlists instead of just scheduling the FPP commands directly?   Playlist would interrupt other playlists when they trigger, but FPP commands would not.   Just a curiosity question.

It was an experiment in different ways. Didn't seem to work, though, since as you noticed, it would interrupt other playlists. I just forgot to kill it and then forgot it was still running.

I'm just now updated to 6.0.2 and will let you know.

5.5 worked great!  I think I'll stick with that(better than v4.6.1), but please let me know if I can help with any additional info to debug.  I tried 5.5 with 'vanilla' (not putting my backup config on it) and with my config.  Both worked fine.

I doubt it is the software. Have you updated to the most recent version of FPP? Do you have the UI Password enabled (this is usually not recommended and known to cause issues)

Yes, UI Password enabled.  How would that stop the USB Sound Card from working?  I can try installing and disabling all passwords.  I did update to the latest FPP and OS.

Is there a reason for that?

There was a bug that would not allow a few settings options to be displayed because of the UI password.

Quote from: virgil1 on August 16, 2022, 11:35:19 PMI can try installing and disabling all passwords.
That should fix your problem.

You probably didn't have the latest update, because it was fixed in one of the more recent versions.

For anyone else struggling with the Soundblaster not showing up - or really anything showing up in the sound settings:

Symptoms: I was running version 6.0 adn added a SB Play 3 USB.  I rebooted and nothing showed up in the audio section, and even the previous default options were gone.  Upgraded to 6.02 (cant rember what version of 6 I was on before) but it didnt help any.  In the troubleshooter it showed I had a soundblaster Play 3 connected, but the Audio section showed nothing - not even the derfault Pi4 autio options that is upposed to be default.  I had this problem before when I had the GUI password option enabled (after upgrade to version 6) and once I disabled it then i saw the Pi4 Audio device there.

To get it to work I:
Re-enabled the GUI password option, and then reboot, then disable it again, reboot, and then it showed in the FPP GUI properly.

So it is something with the GUI password breaking the detection of the audio device.

I have two Pi4s and one Pi3b+ and no issues at all with the Sound Blaster showing up.  I have had the FPP keep rebooting if I do not select the sound blaster as the default device, but once the sound blaster has been selected every thing seems to work fine, other than I get constant errors in the "/var/log/syslog" file.

The GUI password issue has been fixed. Typically using a GUI password does not provide any security and can cause other issues. It is not typically used for normal functionality.

Have you completed the initial setup from the web browser interface ?  You have to either choose default for the ssh id/password, or assign you own.  Once this is completed, ssh would work as it always has.

Looks like there's no network information in the FPP host here:

if-pre-up.d
if-up.d
interfaces
interfaces.d
fpp@FPPMain:/etc/network$ cat interfaces
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup and ifdown
# Include files from /etc/network/interfaces.d:
source /etc/network/interfaces.d/*
fpp@FPPMain:/etc/network$ cd interfaces.d
fpp@FPPMain:/etc/network/interfaces.d$ ls
fpp@FPPMain:/etc/network/interfaces.d$ ls -a

Updated the OS again and the problem seems to have disappeared.

I was helping someone in the zoom room the other night that saw this.
It appears that after an upgrade from 5.5 to 6.x, changing of the network settings is not reflecting in the systemd directories.
- New network files should be in /etc/systemd/network/*** for systemd-networkd

This was causing the OS to grab an IP by DHCP, and then FPP was configuring the host with a second, static address.
Changing FPP to DHCP, would cause two DHCP assigned addresses to appear.

This was then meaning that in some cases, FPP was using the wrong IP address when sending packets, causing other issues. Restarting FPPD would switch this binding.

Creating the 10-eth0.network file by hand to match the static configuration within FPP worked, however FPP was not updating it when changing again (you could get two statics, for example).

I am having some issues since updating to 6.1. I have been running FPP for over 5 years.  I have an issue communication from my pi3 to my Falcon V3.  I have never needed to connect my Falcon to the internet.  The only solution I have found is to plug in an ethernet cable and reboot the Falcon.  Once I do that it is able to communicate just fine. I am not sure if there is a new setting that I must change or if it is best to revert to 5.5.  Any insight would be helpful... I am completely stumped since I have not changed anything from previous versions.  Thank you!

I am running FPP 6.1.1 and have several Falcon v3 products.  None of them are connected to the internet and they work perfectly.

The FPP 6.1.1 update should not impact your Falcon to the best of my knowledge.  I would guess networking/routing issue on the FPP maybe?  Can you define the communication problems better?

I really am unsure. It looks like the FPP is assigning a eth0 address. I don't remember it ever doing that. Should I set a static IP to the same as my Falcon? I don't remember needing to do this in the past. I am only using WIFI for internet connection to the FPP. I am just very confused why things have changed after 5 years and why that once I connect the falcon to my router it fixes the issue.

Connecting to a router has provided a missing link between the items.  The real question is how were they all connected to gether before.  Were using IP bridging via FPP for instance, because that setting has moved and may not have carried forward.

Ethernet out from the PI and in to the Falcon.  Possibly it was bridged before but am unsure. I did not touch any of the IP bridging in the past. Thank you for your help.

Two devices can not share the same IP.  The IP needs to be unique.  Is your controller network the same as your home network, or are they separate networks?

What is the IP/SubnetMask/Gateway of the Falcon?  What is the IP/SubnetMask/Gateway of the FPP?

If you upgraded to 6.1.1, from FPP 5.5 your settings should have upgraded.  If you installed 6.1.1 fresh and restored your settings, you may be missing IP forwarding.  Hard to know how to guide you with the limited info you have shared.

Same as home network.  I don't use it for any data transfer.  Falcon is 192.168.1.50/255.255.255.0/192.168.1.1 and the FPP is  192.168.1.50/255.255.255.0/192.168.1.1

I did an upgrade not a fresh install

The Falcon and FPP can not be the same address.  Change one of them to 192.168.1.51 or something not 50.  The Falcon is probably not coming on-line because it is detecting an IP conflict with the FPP.

I forgot to change my copy and paste of the IP addresses. They do have different IPs.  However I went ahead and deleted the IP information from the FPP, saved, then reentered it.  It appears to be work the same as before after I did a complete power down of the system and then restart. Not sure what went wrong in the upgrade. Thank you for all of your help! I was getting frustrated and you saved the day!

I updated to this version from last xmas version 5.?.  Backed up my pi's beforhand. Started with FPPOS version, but play button was grayed out. Did a full firmware upgrade and updated with my backup.
Problem: Uploading sequence files to remotes.
The uploads progress is very slow.  Eventually 2 remotes finished. 2 had 2 or 3 sequences that failed, larger files. There are no identifiable sequence files on the SD card to copy directly to the sd card. I have been trying for 24 hrs to upload 2 fseq files to 2 remotes that always fail. They did work on the master and one of the remotes.
Error message says: Could'nt find file (sequence name) in upload directory.
Any ideas?

One other issue: Falcon connected to Eth port on pi: Pi addrs 10.0.0.4, Falcon 10.1.1.4 with a static route in my pc worked on older V5.x now seems broken. Route is still in my pc. Maybe use the dhcp server to make the falcon 10.0.0.5?

You could try flashing the FFPOS again, but with the copying issues, I would be ruling out a bad SD card.

If you need a new one, I have had pretty good luck with this model. https://www.amazon.com/SAMSUNG-Endurance-MicroSDXC-Adapter-security/dp/B09WB35BXS/ref=sr_1_5?crid=6BVUWG09MMKL&keywords=samsung%2Bsd%2Bcard&qid=1666763951&qu=eyJxc2MiOiI0LjQ0IiwicXNhIjoiNC40NiIsInFzcCI6IjQuMjIifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=samsung%2Bsd%2Bcar%2Caps%2C106&sr=8-5&th=1

Are you connecting to Pi's wifi to manage, and using the FPP ethernet port to connect to Falcon?  You did not share enough information to have an idea what is happening.  The IP/Subnetmask/Gateway for the PC, Pi wifi (wlan0), Pi Ethernet (eth0), and Falcon would be helpful.

According to your prior post... you did a full install, and then restored your settings from backup.  This is not an upgrade, and you would have lost some settings in the process.  In order to help you get this working, we will need to know how your setup is configured.  Only explaining how they are plugged in is not very helpful.  There is a lot of math in the IPs you are leaving out.

Possibly your old setup had IP forwarding enabled.  That setting does not restore from backup settings.

To use the FPPOS setting I believe that you must have every last 5.x update installed.  If you did not do all the updates then the upgrade will fail, but you can rerun the upgrade and that will most likely fix the issue.

I did enter manually all the Pi network settings.
Saved screenshot from before is identical except there used to be a box called "enable routing between network interfaces" was checked before. This does not exist in FPP 6.0.
I have tried forwarding, and Masquerading / NAT with no sucess.

Under FPP Settings\ UI
Select Advanced.

Capture1.JPG

When viewing network settings in advanced mode, you will see a box named "IP Forwarding" and select forwarding.  Not sure if you need to reboot after that, but I would anyway.

Capture.JPG

IP Forwarding is the new name for interface routing.  (They are basically the same thing)  If you already have IP forwarding turned on, then it is most likely a routing issue from your PC.  Your persistent route looks good though, not to mention the FPP fresh install would not typically impact the PC route table.

Well, after much messing around, I can now access the tree. Forwarding was the key.

As far as the issue of uploading sequences: A couple of my sequences were in the Gigabyte range. Those all fail. Found it was due to a matrix I was testing, expanded the sequence size with no effects assigned. I deleted it and was able to reduce sequence size and now they upload fine.     This may be an issue for matrix users.

Most things work fine without testing with lights. But I cannot see all the remotes from the master via the multisync page. Just shows the pi I am looking at. Am I missing something here?

I do appreciate the help. Thanks for your time.

Glad you are making progress!

Assuming the multisync page shown is from FPP 10.0.0.4.  It lists hostname 10.0.0.2.  I assumed your home network was 10.0.0.x.  Isn't the controller network using the 10.1.1.x network?  I would have guessed all of your display equipment was located on the Pi ethernet 10.1.1.x network.

Can you list the IPs/Subnetmasks/gateways of the devices you can't connect to?  I don't use Multisync and can't help you with those issues, but can make sure your IP addressing is good.

What was the size of the matrix? What version fseq are you saving it as? 1G fseq is unusual unless it is an extremely long song and a huge show (over a million pixels)

You have some filters set at the top. Delete all of the text in all of the boxes displayed (Hostname address, etc.)

It is a 4 x 4 panel matrix, so 16 total panels. It is working, but wont be complete this year for deployment. Possibly I had skipped up to 100,000 on the channel assignments as I am outlining the house and did'nt want to keep moving it till the house was done. Once I deleted the matrix model, my sequences are in the 200meg ranges.
