I thought I was going to have to hard reset after my upgrade because the update compile/update log screen would not go away and close and X did not work. But I refreshed my browser (F5) and there was FPP7 sitting on the device.

What is your secret then?  I have had to unplug the PI after every OS upgrade for as long as I can remember.  I just upgraded 5 of them and had to unplug every single one.  Minor updates are not an issue, but every major OS has required that I pull the power cord.  (I have left them sit for over 24 hours before and it did not make a difference)   The master I upgraded from github, and then used Ron's copy method for the other 4.

Were they Beagle Bones or Pis?  Are you connecting to them wirelessly, or using an ethernet cord?  The three that were connected wirelessly showed "No Network" on the screen.  I did have one plugged into an ethernet cord and wireless both.  That one displayed an ethernet connection, but was not showing a wireless connection.  The one that showed an ethernet connection displayed "FPPD Not Started"  Hindsite, I wish I had tried to get to the controller on the ethernet side., but wifi was not working and I power cycled when I was in front of it without thinking.  The fifth was the Master Player that does not have a display, and that I have an IP power strip that I can reset from my chair,  I do connect to the Wifi side on that as well, but no screen to notice any error messages.

I don't know.....I guess I just press the buttons the right way??

Quote from: JonD on July 27, 2023, 01:02:07 AMI have had to unplug the PI after every OS upgrade for as long as I can remember.
That happened on a couple updates in the past to me as well, but it was a bug that was identified and fixed I beleive.

I use Pi 3B+, Pi4, Pocket Beagle, and BeagleBone Blacks

They were all wi-fi, with the exception of one wired.

What version did you update from? I am pretty sure, I updated from the Master Branch, but I can revert a couple to the version you were using to test.

It seems to me that whether or not it may need a power cycle depends on which version you are upgrading from.  I did 7 devices yesterday and 3 needed to be power cycled and 4 did not.  I didn't track exactly which version each were on before upgrade but I know there were a mix of 6.3<something> and earlier 7.x-master branch versions.

Think you might have a typo in that sentence?

My Master FPP is a Pi4 (8gb) and the Kulp K8pi controllers are all Pi4 (4gb).  Using the stock built-in Pi4 wireless adapter.  They were all at the latest 7.x.beta1 Master Branch before upgrading to 7.0.  I have only had the Kulps a month or two, but have upgraded the OS at least once or maybe twice before.  The FPP Master is a year or two old and it has been through several OS upgrades.  I have had to unplug them every single OS upgrade, but it takes normal updates fine.

I am on the other side, so don't need to go back for me.  I am kind of curious on the Kulp with both interfaces connected myself.  I may downgrade one to see if I can get to the ethernet interface after an update.  FPPD was not loading, but if you could get to the ethernet interface you could software reboot it.

4gb might be pushing it.

What do you mean by pushing it?

So I downgraded to beta1 and it hung after installation.  I could ping the ethernet IP, but not the Wifi IP.  I could not get to the FPP GUI on either address.  Killed power, and turned back on and both worked great.  I then upgraded back to 7.0 and the same thing happened.  Wifi was not pingable, ethernet was, but I could not get to the FPP GUI on either address.  Reboot and everything is working.  I can recreate this on multiple devices and it is consistent every single time.

So this might be the same problem as work. When we upgrade servers at work we found it is best the we power down wait 10 seconds the repower. Going by Dell a reboot does not discharge all the chips so some of them remember the old configs and restart with that old information, I have for years anytime I make changes that involve the chips (network changes, CPU/OS) I do a full shutdown and restart the system.

The base image is getting close to 4gb now and I don't know if there is any overhead needed for updating and if you have any files already on your device...

I think this will need @dkulp to look into it....

I did an in-place upgrade this morning and had no issues.  It's a PI 3B+ that was running FPP Ver 5.  Even though it has an internet connection I still downloaded the FPPOS file to my PC and transferred it to the PI last night and started the upgrade this morning.  It only took about 15 minutes to complete the update and about another 3 or so minutes to reboot and went to the config screen.  I did notice that it did not think that I had the PIHat on it and switched back to the on-board audio instead of my Soundblaster card but I just set them back and after a reboot for the change to the sound card settings and a FPP restart for enabling the Hat and I seem to be good to go.  It controls my landscape lights and sends DMX commands to control brightness so we will see if everything is working tonight.

Base image sounds like SD storage.  The Kulp controllers are using Pi4 (4gb-ram) 32GB SD card.  The Master FPP Pi4 has (8gb of ram) and 64GB storage.  Plenty of space on the SD card.

That is correct, I thought you were referring to the SD card size....FPP uses very little RAM....

Always a good plan.  I've even taken to shutting down my laptop instead of just closing the lid.

  • Ability to "Add" and provision network interfaces that don't yet exist. Should allow provisioning of wlan0 adapters when only eth0 are available at first boot.
How does this work? I have a BBB based controller currently attached with eth0 but don't see how to set this up. Is it only at first boot? Eventually it will have a adapter plugged in and will sit in the yard to work wireless.

On the Network page, there is a new "Add New Interface" button at the bottom.   Click that, type in wlan0, and it should create a new wlan0 interface in the list that you can then configure.
