Trying to install FPP on a Raspberry Pi Zero W, but can't get to the Web UI.

Tried http://fpp.local, tried 168.1.8.1

Used different SD cards. Tried 8gig card and a 32gig card. Used Raspberry Pi Imager, tried BalenaEtcher to write image to SD card.

Downloaded image directly from GitHub: FPP-v6.3-Pi.img.zip, unzipped to get image file.

Can't see any device as FPP when viewing router. Can't find it using xlights scanner.

The green LED flickers on power up, blinks for awhile, then comes on steady.

I don't have a min hdmi to hdmi cable to connect to a monitor, ordered one from Amazon yesterday.

Don't know what else to try.

Keep in mind that I am totally unfamiliar with the Pi zero, but as I understand it, the zero has WiFi built in and USB.  How are you attempting to communicate with the Pi?
On initial powerup, both the WiFi and USB should work and each will have a different IP address that are documented in the manual.  It WILL NOT connect to your home WiFi initially until you have connected to it and you tell it how to connect to your home WiFi.

As an experiment, I just flashed OctoPrint and installed the SD card.  OctoPrint appeared in my router and I was able to connect to it.  This proves the board can correctly communicate via WiFi. However, Octoprint has a setup screen for SSID and Password before flashing.

I have been trying to connect to FPP using the WiFi Tethering and according to the manual, I should be able to access it via 192.168.8.1

I don't have a USB to USB data cable to attempt USB Tethering.

BUT, I never see FPP on my router.

Is this a possible router setup problem, since 192.168.8.1 is out of range of 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.254

For my PizW's I have always created the uSD card and then booted it on a Pi3 or 3B+.  After doing the config as needed for the PizW which is where it will end up I just shut it down and move the card.  Works fine.

You ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT see it on your router until you are able to connect to it so you can set the SSID and password of your home WiFi.  As you noted, the OctoPrint has the ability to set that information prior to flashing.

Unless you do something like the hack that the other Jim suggested, the only way to connect is via the WiFi tethering.  After the Pi boots, if you do a WiFi scan on a phone or laptop, do you see the Pi WiFi access point?  It will have an SSID of FPP.  Did you then connect to that WiFi - password is: Christmas ?  Only then can connect to it via the WiFi tethering - should have an IP of 192.168.8.1

I can see a network FPP on my iphone.  When I try to join it asks for a password.  I tried Christmas (Capital C) and it states "incorrect password for FPP. Also tried christmas, raspberry, falcon

Make sure you don't have trailing or leading spaces in either user or password

MisterTFM

Tried again entering password, Christmas, but still says wrong password.

My mini HDMI cable arrived today.  Plugging it in, then into a TV, I get the 4 large colored blocks on the screen, then it disappears to a black screen.

I don't have another Pi 3 or 4 to load the SD card into.

While I can't tell you what the problem is ultimately (never owned a Pi Zero W) but I have Tethered to dozens of FPP installs and Christmas has always worked as the password from Laptop and Smartphone.

So I dusted off an old Apple iPad, found the FPP network, entered Christmas AND it joined the FPP network, SUCCESS !!!
( Can't explain why an ipad worked but an iphone couldn't join.)

Then going to 192.168.8.1, I was able to get to the FPP setup screen.

I am now following thru on the setup instructions, and hopefully can get the Pi Zero W to log onto my home network using my SSID and PW.

PS: I used xlights\FPP to run my small show last year, but it was on a Raspberry Pi 4.  I got a Raspberry Pi Zero W fairly cheap and was hoping to migrate it over.

Funny part of that is I was tempted to suggest another device (preferably not a phone)...

My Raspberry Pi Zero W is connected to my home router via WiFi.

I got FPP installed and ran through the initial configuration.  Set a static IP address, 192.168.1.250
Set gateway address as the routers address, 192.168.1.1

Was able to transfer sequences from xLights by using FPP Connect.

Created a Schedule, pointed to a Playlist.  All that appears to work.

When I go to HELP, then ABOUT, then UPGRADE FPP, I get an error message:

On the HOST and DNS SETTINGS page, I have the following:

DNS Server Mode
Set to Manual
DNS Server 1  192.168.1.1 (My Home router address)
DNS Server 2      8.8.8.8

Need some help troubleshooting how to get the FPP on the Raspberry Pi Zero W to connect to the internet.

tbone321

Check your network mask and make sure that it is set to 255.255.255.0 and click on the gateway ping button to see if the PI can see the gateway.

jnealand

The usual problem of accessing github is solved by making sure to put one of the dns addresses to 8.8.8.8

I would not put my Home Router as a first (or second) DNS choice. Maybe your router is smarter than mine, but mine does not know any significant DNS information. I put 8.8.8.8 as my first choice.
