Hello,
I am attempting an in-place upgrade from 3.6.2 to 5.5 (eventually 8.x) on a BBB. The instructions mention that it could take a LONG time and that it will reboot when finished. The instructions also mention that the reboot may fail and that it I will need to power cycle the device. My question is, what is considered a LONG time and how will I know if the reboot has failed? Looking at the upgrade process, the last thing it has done is to delete a bunch of files with the last line being "deleting usr/src/linux-headers-4.19.72-bone40/arch/arm/include/asm/div64.h." I started the upgrade about 45 minutes ago. Is there more to the upgrade after the deletion of the files? I don't want to assume the reboot failed and power-cycle the BBB if it is still working on the upgrade.

It looks like everything is good. I eventually decided to hit the IP of the BBB and it was booted up just fine into 5.5. I wasn't sure what to expect and didn't want to do anything while the upgrade was happening. I was waiting for either some kind of "Update Complete" message or for the browser tab that was running the update to go back to the status page after the reboot. So, for anyone that is doing an in-place upgrade and comes across this post, it looks like the upgrade is complete after the mass deletion of files. I can't say how long it took, but I would guess around 15 minutes.

Usually using the in-place upgrade from this far back takes 10 times longer than a fresh install.

Probably around 30 minutes.

And that is a VERY good thing to do

Awesome.

That isn't necessarily true, you just didn't see the remainder of the process.

If you want to see if it had completed, open a new tab and enter the IP address of the device, if you see a red warning with something about Rebuild then it isn't complete.
If to err is human, I am more human than most people.

Please just re-image with FPP 8.x.  You are unlikely to end up with a working system if you don't.  There were various bugs with in-place upgrades in older versions.

From that far back it would be a real chore to go thru the in-place upgrade and it would likely mean doing it more than once.  I would save or backup what you can and just install the latest.  Things are much easier with the current releases.  Use a new uSD card so you can always reboot the old one if you need to go back and look at settings or other content.  And then commit to staying more current.
