I am building a 4 port PiCap that will use the DPIPixel Driver. I have
switched from a Pi 1B which was giving me problems with the DPIPixel
driver to a Pi Zero W2

I am also using the latest 6.1.1. image on this. so a fresh install.
The instructions say If I do a fresh install, which is recommended, I will have to reinstall the license key.

When signing the virtual eeprom I get a error that the  License Key has
already been used to sign a cape.  It is the old cape on a different Pi.  There is no EEPROM on the cape.

Will I have to buy a new license key or can they reset this somehow so I can reuse the key?

I'm also really wondering (worried?) about this issue.  Although not common, it is occasionally necessary to re-image/fresh-install.

Will this always require contacting falconplayer support, to "reset" the license?  Or am I not fully understanding the process?

Per the FAQ's

If you re-image on the same cape, there is no need to "reset" the license. If you are using a Virtual EEPROM then you will have to re-install the key, but that is it.

I often use a single Pi (at my desk) to re-image multiple SD cards (from various field-Pis that stay in their enclosure).

With using a virtual EEPROM, does this mean that I can't fully re-image (and apply virtual EEPROM) using my desk-Pi for all the SD cards?  It appears that the virtual EEPROM also includes each unique Pi serial number (thus problematic if multiple virtual EEPROMs are applied by the exact same Pi).

Is my new workflow (for batch re-imaging) as follows:

  • Remove the SD cards (from multiple Pis) and re-image on a desk-Pi
  • Insert the SD card into the field-Pi to re-assign the virtual EEPROM
  • The license can be re-applied as long as it's being re-applied to the exact same original Pi (since the serial number needs to match the license number)?

Sorry if none of this makes any sense--I'm just not really clear on how virtual EEPROMs are managed.  Or am I over-complicating things?

@Bwinter  I have a similar setup with Pi that stays on my desk all the time.  While I do not have an eepropm issue, I have found lately that using the fppos process is simpler for all my upgrades and I do not have to retrieve all my cards and remember which unit they go back to.  I can sit at my desk and do about 3 FPP upgrades at a time without getting confused as to which one is in which state - LOL.  I do have at least a dozen FPPs in use and a couple backups . test usnits.

That's also what I do for an fppos update.  However, I'm thinking of instances where an entire image needs to be rebuilt (ie, wipe the SD and start over).

On the support web page it is confusing in that when you hit the submit button at the bottom, it does something??, as in you get the busy circle for a mouse cursor, and then you get the message screen back with your messgae in it.  No confirmation that it worked and they recieved your message.
