After updating my Pi via the FPP Status page I get the following message on reboot. I am completely lost. Made a backup before updating. But how do I restore this now? Completely lost. Any ideas?

If you have a good backup, you would just need install a brand new fresh image of FPP.  Once the fresh image has booted, then hit the restore option and select your backup file.  Restore everything you can.  If you have another SD Card you might want to use it instead, and set the current one to the side for now.

I did exactly that. Thanks you.

The problem is, that the backup itself is stored on the "old" SD card. I only have a configuration backup, which I now restored. It's ok, but I would love to have all the sequences restored, too.

Where is the backup stored on the SD Card? I will probably have to mount the ext4 file-system somewhere.

If you're using xLights, most will just run "FPP Connect" to restore the sequences.  If you have something else going on, you should be able to find the files in the below directories.
