Title: **CLOSED**uAmp, uSC and Afterburner Co-op 2016 **Closed**
Post by: corey872 on July 02, 2016, 04:47:13 PM
The 2016 co-op for the Micro String Controller V1, uAmp and Afterburner boards is now CLOSED.

All orders of all parts have shipped!  Merry Christmas to everyone!!

Please read all info and ask any questions in the regular forums before ordering.
Anticipated co-op closing date is July 16th after which revised totals will be calculated and payment emails will be sent.  Payment should be completed by July 23rd.  Component ordering and board production can then begin.  Circuit board etching and assembly lead time is expected to be 4 weeks total. Receipt of finished boards, packing and shipping could take approximately 2 additional weeks, which may put us at the mid / end of September for you receiving the finished boards.  I will work to speed the process where possible, and timely payments are always appreciated.

Shipping / handling is expected to be $6.50 flat rate.  This will include a USPS flat rate shipping box, appropriate static protection bags and other consumable materials to prep for shipping.  As before I will try to offer reduced rate shipping ($3.00) for orders which fit into a small padded envelope. Paypal fees will be added to each order.

============================================================
Prices listed below are best estimates for each component at the quantity goal listed and should be "NTE" - not to exceed.  The price listed below does not include shipping/handling, paypal fee, etc.  I've tried to make best estimates for a reasonable goal on 'quantity' and price accordingly.  If we fail to reach quantity levels, I will explore other options to keep the co-op on track / on budget, though a substantially lower quantity may mean canceling that particular item.

Please do not ask for special shipping, handling, paypal transaction consideration, etc. While I wouldn't mind to do this for a few, if I do it for one, I should do it for all.  If I do it for all, then it gets to be a very complex matter of tracking all special requests, packages, shipping, special shipping orders, etc.  For this to be efficient in bulk, we need to follow a set / defined process.  I appreciate your consideration!

In summary, the Micro String Controller should replace the function any "SSC", but have the following benefits:  smaller, cheaper, pre-assembled, more easily waterproofed, longer controller-to-node transmitting distance, more reliable data transmission, lower overall power consumption, up to 4 indicator LEDs if desired, no-contact test mode if desired.

The board will come 100% pre-assembled, PIC programmed with the latest Falcon firmware and magnetic test switch installed.  It will be ready for channel programming, your wire attachments and then make blinky nodes.  You do not HAVE to add anything else to make blinking nodes.  Simply attach your power, data, and node wires then program channel set-up.

Four indicator LEDs will also be included which you can add to create a 'Mega' version if you wish.

Pre-Assembled/Optioned Board - $10.80

Co-op Goal:  250 boards

==============================================
uAmpV2 or Micro Amp Version 2  Please Note:

The uAmp has received minor upgrades for 2016.  Same great performance, though due to popular request, the LEDs are now surface mount and will come pre-assembled.  Board size is slightly larger (about .040" more in each dimension) and hole sizes are slightly enlarged to reduce the minor wire fitment issues reported last year.

A demonstration video of uAmp V1 is live at:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp8QYcV57bo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp8QYcV57bo)

Introductory thread with questions / answers: http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,2115.0.html (http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,2115.0.html)

At the basic level, the Micro Amp is a signal conditioner / amplifier which can be used with any square wave data source.  The uAmp has been designed using the same MOSFET drive technology as the uSC and has some of the same design features such as built in strain relief holes, basic board comes pre-assembled and ready to use, pre-formed holes for optional LEDs (indicating 'power' and 'data out'),  compact size, ESD protection and short circuit protection on the data line.

Unlike the uSC, the uAmp is solely a digital signal processor.  It has no PIC chip and is not capable of differentiating different 'channels' of data the way a string controller does - it simply processes, clarifies and amplifies ANY data fed to it.  Conversely, it is a simple 'plug-n-play' device.  No PIC programming, firmware, channel setting, etc is required and you do not need to assign 'null' channels to a uAmp as you would with a null node.

Some possible uses:

If you wish to send data from an unmodified SSCV1 or SSCV2 more than a few inches, or an SSCV3/V4 more than a few feet, a uAmp can be added to the output line.  Once installed, the low power, 'messy' SSC data is amplified and clarified so the controller can now be 50, 60, 70 or more feet to the display element.

"Null Node" - Data transmission between nodes is limited to around 6-15 feet (regardless of string controller*).  Installing a uAmp after a node will condition and boost the data signal strength so gaps between elements can be 50, 60, 70 feet or more if needed.  Because the uAmp processes all data and does not use the "take one and pass it on" format a node does, the uAmp does not need to be programmed into the display, or take up channels as a null node does.

*Note - The data stream is regenerated and retransmitted by each node.  Due to this, a controller with a strong output (such as the uSC) can send data quite a far distance to the first node, however, when that data is retransmitted by the first node, the distance is again limited to around 6-15 feet.

Co-op Goal:  800 pieces   Price: $4.65 each

Afterburner - a MOSFET driver kit for Falcon F8 / F16V1 boards.

A demonstration video is live at: http://youtu.be/c035HnwbD-E (http://youtu.be/c035HnwbD-E)

Introductory thread with questions / answers: http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,2326.0.html (http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,2326.0.html)

        User / Install manual:  http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,3406.msg37135.html#msg37135 (http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,3406.msg37135.html#msg37135)

Afterburner is designed as a simple 'drop in' kit to upgrade Falcon F8 / F16V1 boards to MOSFET drive technology like that used in the uSC - Micro String Controllers.  This will boost the Falcon F16V1 or F8-to-Node distance from 20-30 feet to 50-60 feet or more.

The kit is a simple hardware board and resistor array pair requiring no programming, no setting changes, no PIC processors, etc.

One Afterburner kit would upgrade one block of 8 channels - ie one kit to fully upgrade Falcon F8, one or two kits for Falcon F16.

You can run the Falcon F16 output 'split' if desired (ie one side using the original op-amp output for local node strings, one side with the Afterburner for more remotely located strings) without diminishing the performance of either side.  If you wish to boost less than an 8 channel block, the uAmp signal conditioner/amplifier would be one option to provide the same MOSFET drive technology for individual strings.

Co-op goal: 30 pieces   Price $16.50 each
Co-op limit: 36 pieces

Post by: corey872 on July 21, 2016, 09:09:10 PM
I have processed all invoices for the co-op.  Please check your inbox, spam, junk, clutter and other folders.

First, the bad news - due to falling far below the pre-order numbers (which I generally use to estimate prices) on uSC and Afterburner, I was unable to provide any additional discount, so prices remained as originally posted.

On the good news side - in spite of the low numbers, the co-op for those boards will be filled.  Additionally, since we met the pre-order levels for uAmp, I was able to offer a discount on those boards.  The new price will be reflected on the invoice.

I have also updated the master list with some emails which were unresolved.  Please double check your order quantities on the invoice, if you notice any discrepancy please PM me.

As a reminder, to keep the co-op on track for you and your fellow lighting enthusiasts, I kindly ask for payment by July 27th.

Thanks to everyone for your order!

Unfortunately, yes - I had to lock in the order totals and send the job out for quote, so at this point, the only guarantee is enough boards to fill the posted orders.  Typically there is some overage and I put those boards up for sale once all the co-op orders are filled and shipped.  So keep an eye out for the after co-op 'For Sale' announcement.

Thanks

Curious what the projected ship date might be?  Are we looking at a possible delivery prior to Halloween or between there and Christmas?

You can look at last year's thread to maybe get an idea as well as look at reply #3 in this thread.  In 2015 coop started 15 May, payments were collected by 24 Aug, and first shipments of uAmps went out 20 Oct.  This year started 2 July, payments were collected by around 27 July, so my guess is sometime in the near future but it's hard to know for sure.

Again Corey has been updating progress in this reply of this thread..http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,5129.msg53675.html#msg53675 (http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,5129.msg53675.html#msg53675)

Yes, I know he has been updating the current status.  I just need to know if we can likely expect delivry in time for Halloween.  If not, I can can make alternate temporary cables with null pixels and account for them in controllers.  Or to hold out for these to arrive and make no compensations in the controllers and whip up the cables using these.

I am not pushing, I just was curious if the anticipated date was going to fall before Halloween or after.  Thats all.

In my many years on this planet I have learned NEVER to count on close delivery of stuff.  Even if it makes the delivery, it may not work the way you expect or want or even have enough time to build and test.  I always have alternate things ready to go.  If newer better stuff arrives and I can use it, I consider that a blessing.

That being said, I have never seen stuff Corey builds not do what they are supposed to.  If it is microamps you are looking for, I don't believe they have changed since last year and I have 5 of them sitting front of me that have never been used nor do I have a current need for them.  So if you want to buy a couple send me a PM.

There really isn't much to the uAmp. Its simply a non-null null pixel :)

If it doesn't show, its cool.  I just use what I had planned to, a pixel.  I can easily snip it out and insert a uAmp later.

I am not banking on it.  I still have plenty of time.  I won't start setting stuff out for a few weeks yet.  Its all good.

You can look at last year's thread to maybe get an idea as well as look at reply #3 in this thread.  In 2015 coop started 15 May, ...

Well, technically in 2015, the info was posted in May, formal ordering opened July 31 with final delivery around Oct 31.  But the basic layout has always been the same... to get optimum prices, co-ops are generally a long, slow build/assembly process.

We fell somewhat short of the pre-order totals for 2016, so I had to do some extra legwork to keep everything on track for this year...and extra legwork means extra time, too.

With all that said, and back to the original question, I hope to begin shipping in about 3 weeks which would put us about Oct 8th.

Hope this helps.

Yes sir it does. Thank you very much.  I was just looking for a gross time frame.  I assume a couple weeks for delivery.

So I will go ahead and lay the cables out with null pixels for now.  I can swap them out between Halloween and Christmas when I do the changeover.

OK - boards for the 2016 uSC, uAmp and Afterburner co-op are shipping.  I will be making up batches of orders daily and sending out as they are packaged.  I will try to ship on a first paid, first shipped timeline, then circle back around for the special orders.

Don't forget, once all orders are filled and shipped, the Great After Co-Op Sale of 2016 will begin with ALL remaining boards.

You have seen the images of uSC and Afterburner earlier and in prior co-ops.  Here is a bit of board porn for the new uAmp V2, featuring the SMT LEDs.  100% assembled and ready to use once it arrives.

Par Tay!  I got my shipping # :)

So, maybe its obvious... but.  Do you put the uAmp at the beginning of your extended run, or do you put it at the end?

Say I got 50' from one pixel to the next.  Do I put the uAmp after the pixel before the 50' of wire, or in the middle, or at the end of the 50'?  Where is the most advantageous location?

Couple of points:

I've updated the table on page 1 of this thread with dates for orders that have shipped so far.  If you have a ship date, your order is on the way.  If your ship date is still blank, I'm working to get your order shipped as soon as possible!

http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,5129.msg53674.html#msg53674

Per the questions above - a bunch of that info is covered in the user manuals stickied in the Micro Family sub forum.  Briefly:

You generally want the uAmp to go where a node would go and it will boost the signal ~50+ft beyond that.  The input of the uAmp is very sensitive, as I show in the video, it can clarify and boost a pretty lousy signal, but the goal should always be to build a robust system, not one right on the ragged edge.  So with a very 'weak' output device such as an old SSCV1 or SSCV2, you might need to be as little as 2-4 feet out to the uAmp.  If you are running something with strong output like the Falcon controllers or uSC, you could be 20-30 ft away with the uAmp.  Once the signal hits a node and is regenerated, you are again limited to the output of that node... the signal does not transmit 'through' a node.

Waterproofing - everybody likes something different.  I like heat shrink with a bit of hot glue at the ends to seal the wires.  Some people like more 'accessible' enclosures such as PVC pipe with removable end caps. Obviously, as with any electronic circuit, you want to keep ALL water/condensation/moisture out.

Well, I am not trying to boost the output if a Falcon :)  I will be using the uAmp to increase the hop distance between the last pixel of a prop and the first pixel of the next prop.  So what you seem to be saying is the best location seems to be say at the junction of the pigtail of an extension and the wire making the extension so that the uAmp becomes part of the extension cable.  That sound about right?  And 50' would be your recommended maximum to the next pixel?  So, a 40' extension with a uAmp at the start would be a solid build?

Just a quick note - I'm working to wrap up the remaining shipping, but also holding off shipment of the orders with uSCs included, pending discussion with Dave about a firmware update for this years boards.  Once we iron out complete details, I will post info in the Micro Family sub-forum - and as always, the uSCs ship preprogrammed with firmware and ready to go.

Updates:

Still working with Dave regarding a firmware update for this years boards.  Once we iron out complete details, I will post info in the Micro Family sub-forum.  I can then program firmware on the uSCs and resume shipping.

Some people may have received a tracking notice, but not the actual shipment yet.  This means your shipment is pending.

For everyone asking about additional boards, once all co-op orders are filled, all remaining boards will go on sale.  Keep an eye here and in the For Sale forum for additional announcements.  There will be a limited number of boards, sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

Thanks for your patience!

Another update -

Dave has graciously updated the firmware for the 2016 uSC.  In brief detail for this:

The uSC was originally designed to use a 'KA200' PIC chip.  When it came time to produce those boards, that chip was not available in sufficient quantity, so I used an alternate 'KL200' chip... identical in every way except for program memory size changed from 4K to 8K - but we don't come close to using either one, so performance is completely equal.  I updated the new part in the Bill of Materials description, but forgot to update it in the part number section as well.

Due to declining numbers of uSCs for 2016 (we had ~1100 sales in 2015, pre-orders for ~350 in 2016 and actual orders of ~125 in 2016), I had to search for a more cost effective supplier to keep the co-op on track.  I did find a supplier who could produce the small number of boards and still be on budget, so I submitted all the original production documents to them.  During fabrication, they grabbed the KA200 part number from the BOM (not the KL200 part) and built the 2016 uSCs with those.

PIC chips need exact firmware for every specific model (no matter how tiny the change) so as mentioned, Dave graciously updated the firmware for 2016 and all was working great.

A second issue has arisen during testing.  Each year, I grab several random pieces from production and stress test them before sending the boards out.  This is to insure the design and production is robust and everyone gets great, strong working boards.

During testing this year, I have noticed a small random number of PIC chips seem to fail or become corrupt when the uSC is turned on.  Sometimes even to the extent of burning out the PIC and voltage regulators on the board.  I have been working to identify the root cause of the issue before sending the boards out.

As this is a very transient issue, it is very hard to troubleshoot - especially since the 2016 uSC is the exact same design which has proven rock solid over the previous two years.  Due to the random failures, I am holding off shipping orders containing uSCs until I can identify the root cause and insure only solid performing uSCs are sent out.

I will post any additional developments as soon as possible.  I appreciate your patience during this time.

Post by: corey872 on October 26, 2016, 07:59:03 AM
Additional information regarding the 'second issue' I mentioned above:

After several days of trouble shooing, it appears the 5V regulator is going out of tolerance as the input voltage approaches 12V.  Shown in the attached graph, the 'out of tolerance' actually occurs around 11.65V, and the regulator looses all regulation by ~11.90V.  This results in burnout of the regulator itself and sometimes the PIC chip depending on how the regulator fails.

As (bad) luck would have it, most of my testing over the past several days ...with nodes, lead wires and an ATX power supply... led to a tiny voltage drop at the uSC.  I usually had around 11.8V which made the 5V regulator look fine.  Only after I put it on a precision power supply and fed 12.00V did the issue become apparent.

This regulator 'should' be the exact same one specified for the past few years uSCs and should hold a tolerance of 5.0V +/- 1.5% across the full 5-16V input range.  Clearly, it does not meet those standards.

I am in the process of contacting the board manufacturer / component supplier with these findings and will post any additional info as it becomes available.

Thanks for your patience!

No issues with the uAmp.  It was developed at a later time and for a wider application, and uses a different model regulator.

Not wanting to change a tested, proven and known working design, I did not back-port that regulator to the uSC.  The uSCs were 'supposed to be' built using the exact same board design and components which worked perfectly in the prior 2,000+ boards.

I have been doing that.  The table on p.1 of this thread is updated with the ship date of each order. The uAmp-only orders mostly went out earlier in the month.  I will PM you with additional information.

Regarding the rest of the uSC-containing orders:

The manufacturer has agreed they installed bad volt regulators and are going to re-work all the boards with new regulators.  Of course this means a bit more time to ship back to them, rework, ship back to me, re-test, repackage and ship out to you.  Unfortunately, there is not much I can do to speed that process along.  The boards are in outbound shipping now, with orders to speed the process along as much as possible.

I will go ahead and ship the remainder of the orders with all components, except the uSC boards.  So everyone will have the majority of the order as soon as possible.  Then do a second round of shipping as soon as the reworked boards arrive and test OK.  Obviously for the few which ordered just uSC boards, your order will go out all at once when the boards are received.

Sorry for the delay and inconvenience - just trying to make the best lemonade possible at this point.

Right now, I think I have about 10 of each board left...uAmp, uSC and Afterburner.  I have the uAmp and Afterburners formally on sale in the Sale/Trade Section - http://falconchristmas.com/forum/index.php/topic,6060.0.html  I will hold on to the uSCs for a bit longer to insure everyone has a chance to receive their order, make sure it's correct in quantity and things work as expected.  Once I'm reasonably sure no replacements are needed, I will announce those for sale as well.

As far as next year, I can only say, 'I will announce the co-op and see how it goes.'  If I get enough orders, I can make the production run.

This thread was for the 2016 sale so it has long been closed.  The 2017 co-op was open for orders mid-June through mid-July of 2017.  Unfortunately, it is now closed for orders and in the final stages of progress, too.

The next best chance would be to keep an eye on the 'For Sale' section.  Once all co-op orders are filled, I put the remainder of the boards up for sale on a first-come, first served basis.
